Urban legends are captivating tales filled with folklore, often spreading rapidly within communities. These stories are narrated with dramatic flair, presented as true accounts involving real individuals—even though they might be entirely fictional.
Local details are frequently incorporated into these legends, yet it’s fascinating how the same story can appear in various forms worldwide. Urban legends often convey a moral lesson or hold cultural significance, encouraging communities to keep them alive. One thing is certain: these eerie tales have left countless people lying awake at night. Here are ten of the most intriguing ones:
10. The Choking Doberman

This urban legend originates from Sydney, Australia, and revolves around a strange incident involving a Doberman dog that was choking. One evening, a couple, after having a few too many drinks, returned home to discover their dog struggling to breathe in the living room. The man panicked and passed out, but the woman quickly contacted her longtime friend, a veterinarian, and arranged to take the dog to the clinic.
After delivering the dog to the vet, she headed back home to help her husband into bed. As she was doing this, the phone rang. The vet, in a state of panic, screamed that they needed to evacuate their house immediately. Confused but alarmed, the couple hurried out of their home without delay.
As they descended the stairs, they were met by several police officers rushing up. When the woman inquired about the situation, an officer calmly explained that the dog had been choking on a human finger, suggesting a burglar was still inside their house. Moments later, the unconscious intruder, missing a finger, was discovered in their bedroom.
9. The Suicidal Boyfriend

This tale, also referred to as “The Boyfriend’s Death,” has numerous versions and is often seen as a cautionary story about venturing too far from safety. Our version is set in Paris during the 1960s. A young couple, both college students, are spending time together in his car. They park near the Forest of Rambouillet to avoid being seen. Afterward, the boyfriend steps out for some fresh air and a cigarette, while the girl stays inside the car.
After waiting for five minutes, the girl exits the car to search for her boyfriend. Suddenly, she notices a shadowy figure nearby. Terrified, she rushes back to the car to leave—but as she starts driving, she hears faint squeaking sounds that grow louder.
The noises persist for a few seconds until the girl decides she must escape. She presses the accelerator, but the car doesn’t move; someone has tied a rope from the car’s bumper to a nearby tree.
Desperate, she floors the gas pedal again and hears a piercing scream. She steps out of the car and discovers her boyfriend hanging from the tree. The squeaking noises were from his shoes scraping against the car’s roof.
8. The Slit-Mouthed Woman

In Japan and China, there’s a chilling legend about a woman named Kuchisake-Onna, also known as the slit-mouthed woman. According to some accounts, she was the wife of a samurai. One day, she betrayed her husband by having an affair with a younger, more attractive man. When her husband returned and discovered her infidelity, he flew into a rage, took his sword, and slit her mouth from ear to ear.
Some believe the woman was cursed with immortality, doomed to roam the world so others could see her gruesome scar and feel pity. There are tales of people encountering a strikingly beautiful young woman who asks, “Am I pretty?” When they answer yes, she removes her surgical mask, revealing her horrifying wound, and repeats the question. Those who no longer find her attractive meet a tragic fate at her hands.
This story carries two lessons: a compliment costs nothing, and honesty isn’t always the safest choice.
7. Crybaby Bridge

As the story goes, a couple was driving home from church with their infant during a heavy rainstorm. While arguing, they approached a flooded bridge. The water was deeper than expected, causing their car to get stuck. They decided to exit the vehicle to seek help, with the woman staying behind for reasons left to speculation.
While her back was turned, she heard her baby crying loudly. Returning to the car, she discovered the child had been swept away by the floodwaters. Legend has it that if you visit the same bridge (its exact location remains a mystery), you can still hear the baby’s cries echoing.
6. Zanfretta’s Alien Abduction

Fortunato Zanfretta’s abduction story has grown into one of Italy’s most renowned urban legends in recent decades.
Based on his own testimonies, given under hypnosis, Zanfretta claimed to have been abducted by extraterrestrials known as Dragos from the planet Teetonia. He reported multiple abductions by the same beings over several years (1978-1981). While the story may sound terrifying, Zanfretta’s words during one hypnosis session suggest a more hopeful perspective on the aliens’ intentions:
“I know you are trying to visit more often . . . but no, you can’t come to Earth. People are frightened when they see you. You can’t form friendships. Please leave.”
Zanfretta has provided more extensive details about his alien encounters than perhaps anyone else in history. His detailed accounts might make even the most skeptical individuals reconsider their beliefs. To this day, the Zanfretta case remains one of the most intriguing and mysterious ‘x-files’ worldwide.
5. The White Death

This tale revolves around a young girl in Scotland who despised life so intensely that she sought to erase every trace of her existence. Eventually, she took her own life, and her family soon discovered her tragic decision.
In a horrifying turn of events, every family member died a few days later, their bodies brutally dismembered. According to the legend, if you learn about the White Death, the girl’s ghost may seek you out, knocking on your door repeatedly. The knocks grow louder until you open the door, at which point she kills you to ensure her story remains hidden. Her ultimate goal is to prevent anyone from knowing she ever existed.
Like many urban legends, this story is likely the product of a modern Aesop’s vivid imagination. Still, it’s always wise to check who’s knocking before opening the door.
While urban legends can send shivers down your spine, nothing compares to the terror of pure fiction. Keep the lights on after diving into the stories in Scraping the Bone: Ten Dark Tales available at Amazon.com!
4. The Black Volga

In the 1960s, a black Volga car was allegedly seen roaming the streets of Warsaw, believed to be used by kidnappers targeting children. The legend, fueled by Western propaganda, claimed that high-ranking Soviet officials in Moscow during the 1930s used the black Volga to abduct young, attractive girls for the gratification of top Soviet leaders. Another variation of the story suggests that vampires, enigmatic priests, Satanists, organ traffickers—and even Satan himself—operated the black Volga.
Various accounts claim that the children were kidnapped so their blood could be used to treat wealthy leukemia patients worldwide. However, none of these stories have ever been proven true.
3. The Well to Hell

In 1989, Russian scientists in Siberia drilled a borehole approximately 14.5 kilometers deep into the Earth’s crust. Upon breaking through into a cavity, they lowered equipment to investigate. The temperature exceeded one thousand degrees Celsius, but the most shocking discovery was the audio captured by their instruments.
The microphone recorded around seventeen seconds of terrifying sounds before melting. Many scientists, convinced they had heard the screams of the damned from Hell, resigned immediately. Those who remained witnessed an even more horrifying event later that night: a plume of glowing gas erupted from the borehole, forming the shape of a massive winged demon, with the words “I have conquered” in Russian etched into the flames. Although this incident is widely regarded as a hoax, many still believe it to be true, keeping the “Well to Hell” legend alive.
2. Elisa Day

In medieval Europe, there was said to be a young woman named Elisa Day, whose beauty resembled the wild roses by the river—blood-red and untamed. One day, a stranger arrived in town and fell deeply in love with her. They spent three days together. On the first day, he visited her home. On the second, he gifted her a single red rose and asked her to meet him where the wild roses bloomed. On the third day, he led her to the riverbank—where he ended her life. The man allegedly waited until she turned her back, then struck her with a rock, whispering, “All beauty must die,” killing her instantly. He placed a rose between her teeth and let her body drift into the river. Some say her ghost still wanders the riverside, blood dripping from her head, clutching a single rose.
1. The Greek Soldier

This obscure legend recounts the tale of a Greek soldier who, after WWII, was on his way home to marry his fiancée. Tragically, he was captured by fellow Greeks with opposing political views, tortured for five weeks, and ultimately killed. In the early 1950s, particularly in North and Central Greece, stories emerged of a strikingly handsome soldier in uniform who would appear overnight, seducing widows and young virgins solely to impregnate them.
Five weeks after the birth of the children, the soldier would vanish forever, leaving behind a letter explaining that he had returned from the dead to spread his seed, ensuring his sons would avenge his murder.
