Second only to the Sun, the Moon has captivated humanity since ancient times! Or has it? Even today, in an era where wild and absurd stories spread rapidly online, some claims about the Moon stand out among the most intriguing. As we will discover, one such theory even suggests that the Moon may not have always existed.
There are also genuinely perplexing anomalies that remain unsolved. Even more fascinating, some of these bizarre conspiracies—if proven true—could provide the answers to questions that have long eluded us. Here are 10 of the most unusual facts and outlandish conspiracies about our Moon.
10. Its Size and Positioning Are Too Impressive for Some
In recent years, Earth has experienced several total solar eclipses caused by the Moon. The fact that we witness such events is remarkable in itself. According to our sources, the Moon is the only known satellite capable of doing this with its host. (Although some might argue—quite passionately, we might add—that Earth is the only solid planet from which a total solar eclipse can be seen.) The reason lies in the relative sizes of the Sun, Moon, and the Earth’s distance from both.
The Moon’s size is about a quarter of Earth’s. Now, here’s where it gets peculiar. The Moon’s diameter is roughly 400 times smaller than the Sun’s, yet it is also 400 times closer to Earth than the Sun.
Oh, and the Moon maintains a perfect circular orbit around the Earth—the only moon known to do so. This results in the illusion that the Moon and the Sun are the same size in our sky.
Although it’s probably just a coincidence, all these factors happening together still have an astronomically slim chance—literally millions to one. And yet, they did. Naturally, those in conspiracy and UFO circles argue that this is no accident: They claim the Moon is “artificial,” and that its exact dimensions are the product of design and intelligence. What you choose to believe is up to you.
9. It’s Hollow
Carl Sagan wrote in his 1966 book, Intelligent Life In The Universe, that a natural satellite (which current thinking deems the Moon to be) cannot be hollow. Most would likely agree with his statement.
So, scientists were stunned when seismic equipment on the Moon detected significant reverberations on November 20, 1969, after the Apollo 12 lunar module’s ascent stage was deliberately dropped back to the surface. The Moon not only vibrated “like a bell,” but it did so for more than an hour.
If the data were accurate, it would imply that the Moon is hollow.
In the subsequent mission, a larger payload was dropped, and the reverberations were measured again. This time, the “ringing” effect was even more pronounced, lasting for over three hours.
Despite the potential implication that the Moon might indeed be hollow—based on NASA’s own findings—the results were largely ignored by NASA in the years that followed. To the public's knowledge, no further studies on this were conducted.
8. The Moon’s Craters Are Unusual
The Moon is covered with craters from countless impacts over the course of its long history. What’s odd is how consistent these craters appear in terms of depth. Conventional wisdom suggests they should vary greatly in depth, but they do not.
Just another space anomaly? Probably. But for some, it seems a bit more significant.
Those who believe the Moon is artificial or hollow often point to these craters as additional evidence supporting their theories. One such idea proposes the existence of an “inner casing” beneath the Moon’s rocky exterior.
The theorists claim that this casing would be made of a metallic material, designed to absorb the impacts and evenly distribute the force to prevent deep craters. According to some, this casing also protects whatever might lie beneath it.
7. The Moon’s Numerous ‘Artificial’ Structures
NASA claims that “artificial” structures on the Moon are mostly optical illusions and, in other cases, the result of blurry images. However, sharp-eyed UFO enthusiasts argue that these images provide undeniable evidence of alien and artificial constructions on the Moon.
A quick search online will yield a wealth of images, and some of these are quite persuasive. However, there’s little, if any, concrete evidence to support the validity of these alleged discoveries.
The images are still worth exploring. One such anomaly, known as “The Shard,” appears in NASA Image LO-III-84-M. It looks like an artificial structure rising above the surface. The fact that it also casts a shadow has led many UFO researchers to dismiss the idea that it's simply an optical illusion.
Interestingly, not far away (in relative terms) is another supposed structure. “The Tower” is estimated to be about 11 kilometers (7 miles) tall. If this is indeed a true building on the Moon, it would be taller than anything on Earth and could provide insight into how such low gravity might be utilized by future space explorers.
6. It Was Brought Here And Placed Into Orbit
There is no question that life on Earth would be dramatically different without the Moon. In fact, human life might not even exist. The Moon stabilizes Earth’s oceans and polar regions, creating the seasons that allow most parts of the planet to flourish and life to thrive.
However, many ancient texts seem to describe a time when the Moon was not part of our sky. So, as improbable, strange, and perhaps even absurd as it may sound to some, is it possible that the Moon is an artificial structure deliberately designed to precise specifications and placed in a calculated orbit to stabilize conditions on Earth?
Whoever might be responsible for such an endeavor would require highly advanced technology—certainly far beyond what we currently know—and immense knowledge.
For the sake of argument, if the Moon was deliberately placed here with a specific goal, who could have been behind such an extraordinary accomplishment? Perhaps a long-lost civilization far more advanced than us today? If so, where did they disappear to? And if not them, who then?
5. It Is The Outcome Of Alien Intelligence
Alright, some of you are already ahead of me on this. So let’s get straight to it. Aliens!
If an unknown ancient and native civilization wasn’t responsible for the Moon’s intentional placement, the only reasonable conclusion would be that an extraterrestrial species had a hand in it.
There are various interpretations of this theory as well. We’ll explore one such claim soon, but researcher and controversial author David Icke argues that the Moon is an artificial satellite transmitting signals from Saturn to Earth, thus creating the “matrix” that shapes our reality.
Come on, that makes the idea of secret bases on the Moon sound more plausible, doesn’t it?
More than anything else, you’d have to wonder: Why would an alien civilization be so focused on positioning a moon around a foreign planet like Earth? We’ll dive into that in a moment.
4. The Moon’s Rotation Is Also Extraordinary
We’ve all heard about the so-called dark side of the Moon, the mysterious portion of our celestial companion that remains hidden from our view. Many assume this is because the Moon doesn’t rotate. However, it’s more accurate to refer to this area as the “far side” since the Moon does indeed spin.
The Moon takes 27.3 days to complete an orbit around Earth. At the same time, it also takes 27 days for the Moon to perform a full rotation on its own axis. This “synchronous rotation” causes one side of the Moon to always remain out of view from our planet. Once again, the Moon appears to be exceptional in this regard.
For those who subscribe to the “dark side of the Moon” conspiracy, the result is still the same. A side of the Moon is constantly turned away from our planet, making it the perfect location to set up a base and conduct covert activities with advanced technology.
3. Operational Bases
Alex Collier isn’t the only person to claim that bases are present on the Moon. Over the last two decades, there has been a surge of such reports, often linked to anonymous whistle-blowers and leaked classified documents.
A recent assertion about an operational Moon base comes from Dr. Michael Salla, who collaborates with the Chinese space agency in their quest for a manned mission to the Moon. Should this mission succeed, it will mark the first landing since NASA’s Apollo 17 mission in 1972.
Salla also claims that the base is the result of the “military-industrial extraterrestrial complex.” His statements go further, alleging that NASA has been actively bombing these bases, as well as “ancient artifacts and facilities,” in an effort to erase any evidence of their existence.
Additionally, Salla has alleged that secret mining missions are underway, orchestrated by a “secret world government” that has secretly partnered with an unknown extraterrestrial civilization. As with all such claims, you are free to draw your own conclusions.
2. Ancient Texts Mention A Time ‘Before The Moon’
Numerous ancient texts reference a time “before the Moon,” and many scholars have cited these works throughout history.
For instance, Aristotle described Arcadia, noting that it was inhabited “before there was a moon in the sky above the Earth.” In a similar vein, Apollonius of Rhodes mentioned a period “when not all the orbs were yet in the heavens.”
The Chibcha people in Colombia also have similar ideas in their traditional oral stories. They recount, “In the earliest times, when the Moon was not yet in the heavens!” This phrasing bears a striking resemblance to that of Apollonius.
Another interesting point, especially in light of the peculiar theories about the Moon’s placement around Earth, comes from Zulu folklore, which suggests that the Moon was hauled across space from a great distance.
Many of these tales also describe significant upheaval on Earth until the Moon eventually found its proper orbit in the sky.
1. Alex Collier’s Letters From Andromeda
In his highly controversial and often mocked book, Letters From Andromeda, researcher and author Alex Collier claimed to have unearthed the true history of the Moon. The way he gathered his information raised many eyebrows, as he asserted that he received “telepathic communications” from an alien living in the “Zenetae” constellation. And this was just the beginning of his more extraordinary assertions.
According to Collier, the Moon is actually a massive spaceship that arrived here millions of years ago, bringing with it “reptilians, human-reptilian hybrids, and the first humans to walk on Earth!” Collier maintained that the Moon is hollow and features multiple secret entrances across its surface. He also claimed that there was a metallic shell beneath the surface.
In an even more incredible claim, Collier suggested that remnants of ancient alien bases, left over from a massive war fought 113,000 years ago, are still present on and inside the Moon. These bases are now said to be inhabited by a secret world government that collaborates with an extraterrestrial race.
