Beaches are often seen as havens of joy and relaxation, yet beneath the cheerful exterior, some hide dangerous and sinister stories waiting to be uncovered.
More often than one might imagine, what starts as a simple beach outing turns into a nightmare—sometimes with shocking or even tragic outcomes. Who knows, your favorite coastal retreat might be hiding a dark past of its own.
These are ten tales from beaches where horrific events have occurred.
10. Wanda Beach

In January 1965, 15-year-old Marianne Schmidt acted as a caring older sister, taking her younger siblings to the beach. Joined by her best friend and neighbor, Christine Sharrock, the group headed to Wanda Beach in Sydney, Australia, expecting a pleasant afternoon.
It was a windy day, with no signs of the weather letting up. Eventually, Schmidt and Sharrock decided to grab their bags and leave. As they walked towards their belongings, Schmidt's younger brother asked why they were going in the wrong direction. The girls simply laughed it off and kept walking.
They never came back. Their bodies were found next to each other after their families reported them missing. Despite conducting the largest interview effort in Australian history during the investigation, the case remains unsolved. It stands as the oldest case still being reviewed by the New South Wales unsolved homicide unit.
9. Short Sands Beach

Rhonda Pattelena, 35, cherished her time at Short Sands Beach in Maine. A mother of three from Bedford, Massachusetts, she made it a point to visit her beloved spot each summer, enjoying the waves and the sensation of sand beneath her feet.
In March 2021, she was likely thrilled when she and her boyfriend, Jeffrey Buchanan, whom she considered her "soulmate," went for a walk along her favorite beach. But she never came back. Despite Buchanan claiming to have "blacked out" and forgotten his actions, surveillance footage showed him violently killing Pattelena with a large rock.
The crime stunned both the community and Pattelena’s loved ones. In her memory, the town where she lost her life held a vigil at the scene to "reclaim" the place she once loved to visit.
8. Cannon Beach

If you ever drove past the breathtaking shores of Cannon Beach in Oregon, you might be captivated by its natural beauty—but you’d likely have no idea that it's haunted. According to local legend, a section of U.S. Highway 101 near the beach is home to a chilling ghostly figure known as the "Bandage Man."
The tale begins in the 1950s when a young couple parked their truck by the water. Suddenly, their vehicle began to shake violently from the outside. When they turned around, they saw a man completely wrapped in blood-soaked bandages, banging on their window and desperately trying to get inside.
The couple quickly fled, and the mysterious figure vanished from sight. Since that moment, others have reported similar eerie sightings at the same location, with some encounters even occurring as recently as 2019.
7. Jaboatao dos Guararapes

Marcelo Rocha Santos, 51, was enjoying a peaceful afternoon at the beach with friends in the eastern Brazilian city of Jaboatao dos Guararapes. During their time there, he realized he urgently needed to use the bathroom. With no restrooms nearby, he and a friend decided to relieve themselves in the water.
This proved to be a fatal error. As they were in the water, an 8-foot (2.6-meter) tiger shark appeared and viciously attacked Santos right before his friend's eyes. Despite his desperate attempts to defend himself, it was in vain. Santos quickly lost consciousness, and the water turned red with his blood.
By the time his friends were able to drag his lifeless body from the water, large portions of his arm and leg had been torn away. He was declared dead upon arrival at a nearby hospital.
6. Hermosa Beach

In April 1954, a young couple was enjoying a day at Hermosa Beach in California with their infant son when disaster struck. Without warning, a massive wave surged toward them, sweeping the defenseless baby away.
Devastated and unable to find their child, Mr. and Mrs. McDonald clung to each other, struggling to process the horrifying reality of what had just occurred. Sadly, after exhausting all efforts to save their baby, they were left to wait in torment until their child's lifeless body was found on the shore later that day.
But the story didn’t end there. Unknown to the couple, a local resident who overheard the scene was a photographer for The Los Angeles Times. Sensing something significant was happening, he instinctively captured a photo that unknowingly immortalized the couple’s most heartbreaking moment for the world to witness. The photograph was so moving that it won a Pulitzer Prize for its photographer, John Gaunt.
5. Fort Lauderdale

South Florida's beaches are among the most famous in the world—but they, too, have witnessed their share of tragedy. In June 2012, onlookers were stunned when a large yacht washed ashore on a Fort Lauderdale beach, with no one aboard.
It didn’t take long for people to realize that the yacht belonged to renowned Brazilian oil magnate and philanthropist, Guma Aguiar. A thorough examination of the boat found no blood or other signs of his presence. Despite extensive searches, Aguiar’s location remained unknown, and he was ultimately presumed dead.
However, things took a stranger turn. In the months following Aguiar’s disappearance, a conspiracy theory emerged, suggesting that he was still alive and hiding out in the Netherlands. One of the people who publicly entertained this theory was Aguiar’s own wife’s lawyer.
4. Huntington Beach

If you had spent some time by the shores of Huntington Beach, California, in 1968, you might have come across a group of teenagers playing music and sporting vibrant clothes. In the midst of the hippie counterculture, this scene would have seemed typical, and you probably wouldn’t have thought much of it.
What appeared to be harmless seaside concerts were actually part of a deceptive recruitment scheme by a dangerous cult known as 'Teens for Christ.' Their objective was to lure innocent beachgoers to their 'Light Club' near the pier, where they would be coerced into joining the group.
Not long after, 'Teens for Christ' transformed into the notorious 'Children of God'—a cult forever marked by its leader's horrific mistreatment of followers. This abuse ranged from sexual exploitation and violence to incest and extensive mind control.
3. Somerton Beach

In December 1948, two pedestrians discovered a well-dressed middle-aged man lying motionless on Somerton Beach in Adelaide, Australia. Feeling uneasy, they approached him, only to find that he was deceased. The man carried no identification, and there were no visible signs of foul play.
As part of their investigation, authorities found a small, rolled-up slip of paper bearing the words 'Tamam Shud.' This Persian phrase translates to 'The end' and is a reference to the 11th-century poem 'The Rubaiyat.'
For years, the true identity of the man remained a mystery. But recent DNA testing might finally be unraveling this long-standing enigma. Over the years, many scientists and researchers attempted to uncover his identity, but it wasn’t until recently that progress was made. Theories about his past were varied—from a Russian spy to a lover poisoned by jealousy, to a smuggler or even a former ballet dancer. In 2022, it is now believed that the unknown 'Somerton Man' was Carl 'Charles' Webb, an electrical engineer from Melbourne.
2. Gilgo Beach

In 2010, Long Island police received a desperate 9-1-1 call from Shannan Gilbert, claiming someone was trying to kill her. Little did they know, this call would lead to a chilling discovery. As the search for Gilbert unfolded, investigators unearthed the bodies of four women, all wrapped in fabric and discarded along the shores of Gilgo Beach.
It quickly became apparent that these women, including Gilbert, were working as escorts on Craigslist. As the investigation progressed, up to 16 more victims were discovered in the same area, indicating that a serial killer had been luring women to the coast for nearly two decades without detection.
Despite the passage of ten years since the bodies were found, authorities have yet to charge anyone with the crimes, and the identity of the killer remains a mystery.
1. Cheviot Beach

World leaders are undoubtedly among the most monitored and heavily protected individuals on Earth, which makes the story of Harold Holt even more perplexing. Holt, the sitting Prime Minister of Australia in December 1967, chose to take a swim at a beach near Melbourne, unaware that this would be the last time he would ever be seen.
At some point during his swim, Holt vanished without a trace—and has never been found. Despite extensive searches, his remains were never discovered. The only clue left behind was a pile of clothes on the shore.
In the years following his disappearance, numerous theories have been proposed to explain the baffling event. These range from suicide, to a tragic accident, to a possible international assassination plot.
