Legends suggest that individuals become ghosts when their lives end abruptly, violently, or unjustly, trapping them in the mortal realm. If this is true, the military must be a significant source of such spirits, given the countless untimely and tragic deaths it has caused.
The spirits featured here range from menacing to playful, but each has a story deeply connected to the military they were part of during their lifetime.
10. The Ghostly Clash of Edgehill

The Battle of Edgehill, fought in October 1642, stands as one of the most infamous encounters of the English Civil War, pitting the Royalists against the Parliamentarian 'Roundheads.' This brutal three-hour conflict involved 30,000 soldiers and ended in widespread death and disgrace. The battle yielded no clear victor, and the fallen were stripped of their belongings and left to decompose on the battlefield.
Understandably, such a senseless and degrading demise left the deceased soldiers far from content. By Christmas of that year, eerie apparitions and sounds began to emerge. Shepherds and travelers in the area reported seeing spectral armies locked in combat, their ghostly forms clashing in the night sky.
Upon learning of these occurrences, the king commissioned an official inquiry. The investigators concluded that the hauntings were genuine, marking the only time in British history that the existence of ghosts received formal recognition.
While the Christian burial of the scattered remains reduced the hauntings, the spectral armies reportedly continued to reenact the battle on its anniversaries for over a century. Locals turned the phenomenon into a spectacle, gathering at a safe distance to watch the ghostly reenactments as if it were a picnic event.
9. The Spirits of the Alamo

The Battle of the Alamo is a pivotal event in the Texas Revolution, and the mission that bears its name has since become one of the most iconic war memorials in the United States. It is also renowned as one of the most haunted locations. Tales of Alamo ghosts began almost immediately after the battle, when a Mexican general tasked with demolishing the structure reportedly encountered six spectral figures in robes wielding flaming swords, warning him not to harm the site.
Over time, accounts of hauntings at the Alamo diversified: witnesses reported seeing the spirits of Texan soldiers who fought in the battle, as well as strange, otherworldly forms emerging from the building after dark. Among the most famous apparitions is the Alamo Sentry, a ghostly soldier whose heavy footsteps are said to echo across the roof on rainy nights, despite being invisible.
Interestingly, this is a remarkable achievement for the “ancient spirit,” given that the Alamo’s roof was not accessible until relatively modern times.
8. Fort Pulaski

Fort Pulaski, located near the scenic Savannah River in Georgia, is managed by the National Park Service. Despite its serene appearance today, it harbors a grim past. During the Civil War, it served as a prison where more than 500 Confederate officers endured freezing temperatures and starvation during the brutal winter of 1864–1865. As a result, the fort is said to exude a hostile and oppressive atmosphere.
One stairwell within the fort holds a particularly tragic legacy: during battles, injured soldiers were callously left there to perish. It is believed that the spirits of these soldiers still linger, desperately trying to ascend the stairs despite their fatal injuries, driven by the desire to rejoin the fight.
7. USS North Carolina

The USS North Carolina, one of the most formidable warships of WWII, is also reputed to be intensely haunted by numerous spirits, with two being particularly notable.
Among the primary apparitions is a lively young blonde man who continues to perform his duties on the ship even after death. While harmless, his playful antics—such as opening and closing doors and hatches—can be unnerving for unsuspecting visitors. Other similar spirits have been reported, but they remain focused on their tasks, silently carrying out the responsibilities they had in life.
In contrast, a more sinister presence lurks aboard the ship. Witnesses have described encountering a dark, shadowy figure that radiates anger and hatred, often causing those who face it to flee in terror.
6. Chickamauga Battlefield

One of the fiercest clashes of the American Civil War occurred over control of Chattanooga, Tennessee, with the bloodiest fighting taking place at Chickamauga. Adding to the tragedy, the site also saw the devastation of the Georgia Cherokees due to a smallpox outbreak.
Now a quiet National Park, the area still bears the scars of these horrific events. It is rumored to be one of the most haunted locations in the country. Visitors often report encountering a strange fog that vanishes as soon as they leave the vicinity. Ghostly lights, spectral figures, and the distant echoes of battle have also been witnessed.
The most terrifying entity said to roam the area is “Old Green Eyes,” a monstrous being that haunts a specific hill. Described as a hairy creature with sharp fangs and glowing green eyes, its true nature remains a mystery. Some believe it to be a half-human, half-beast drawn to the site’s violent past, while others think it’s the tormented spirit of a soldier whose twin died in the battle.
5. Major Smallman

A spectral figure from the English Civil War, Major Smallman was a devoted supporter of the King. In 1645, his home was attacked by Roundhead forces, but the Major refused to surrender. He skillfully evaded his enemies and fled on horseback. However, his fate remains uncertain, as his ghost is often sighted in the area, both within his former home and across the fields, riding a phantom steed.
While the reason for the Major’s ghostly presence is unclear—since he did escape—it might be linked to the other spirit haunting his home: a young girl who initially greets onlookers with a gentle smile before unleashing a blood-curdling scream.
4. The Naked Legionnaire of Abbey Church

Encountering a ghost in a dark alley is terrifying enough, but imagine meeting a naked ghost. Such a chilling entity is said to exist.
The Bath region in Great Britain is renowned for its numerous paranormal tales, but none are as peculiar as the naked ghost of a Roman soldier spotted sprinting through the alleys of Abbey Church. The apparition is remarkably lifelike—so much so that a police officer once mistook it for a streaker and pursued it, only to watch it vanish into nothingness.
The naked legionnaire is shrouded in mystery, with the most puzzling question being: If the ghost is truly nude, how do people identify it as an ancient Roman soldier? Does it bear tattoos or some other distinguishing mark?
3. Jefferson Barracks

While haunted castles and forts are common worldwide, Jefferson Barracks stands out with an extraordinary number of ghost sightings. Established in 1826 as a military complex in St. Louis, it has witnessed nearly every major military event on U.S. soil, leaving behind some eerie and inexplicable traces.
Jefferson Barracks boasts 42 buildings, nearly all of which are rumored to be haunted. While the barracks remain in use, tales suggest that the number of spectral soldiers roaming the grounds may outnumber the living. The main building is said to be inhabited by a host of ghosts, including a Civil War general who eternally issues orders from the post commander’s office. Barracks and prison structures are plagued by floating apparitions, unexplained footsteps, and disembodied voices shouting drill commands. The hospital is frequented by spirits in Civil War uniforms—some appearing as smoky figures, while others are so lifelike they can interact with the living.
Among the most dreaded locations is the Powder Magazine. Guards assigned to the building occasionally encounter an enraged spectral sentry, blood dripping from a bullet wound in his forehead, who confronts them and demands they relinquish their post.
2. The Ghosts of USS Arizona

In 1941, the battleship USS Arizona tragically sank during the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, claiming the lives of most of its crew. Decades later, a memorial was erected above its submerged wreckage, marking its final resting place.
Since the memorial’s inauguration, numerous visitors have reported unexplained occurrences that hint at the presence of the sailors’ spirits. These experiences range from mysterious floating orbs and the sounds of explosions to sightings of a severely burned spectral sailor wandering the halls in eternal torment.
One of the most chilling aspects is the oil droplets that still rise from the sunken ship, creating an effect eerily reminiscent of breathing. At times, these oil slicks are said to form images resembling human faces.
1. Fort Bellefontaine

Fort Bellefontaine stands out as an unusual military ghost story, as it lacks spectral soldiers or generals. Instead, the fort itself is believed to be a paranormal entity, akin to a haunted house.
The paranormal occurrences at the fort range from inexplicable sights and sounds to the enigmatic main staircase. Photographs taken on its second step reveal a strange dark red mist enveloping the stairs, with no natural explanation for its presence.
+ Colonel Ranald McKenzie

Colonel Ranald McKenzie, a long-serving commander of Fort Concho, was so devoted to his post that it’s believed he never truly left. His spirit is said to linger in the Officers’ Row, overseeing the area and occasionally appearing to visitors and staff.
McKenzie’s ghost is particularly unsettling due to its poltergeist-like abilities. One female staff member encountered this firsthand while working in the Officers’ Row. Hearing heavy footsteps behind her, she was suddenly hurled against a wall by a freezing gust of air. She claimed the ghost was unmistakably McKenzie, as it cracked its spectral knuckles just as he had in life.
