It’s a painful experience every time the calm of our daily lives is broken by the brutal actions of radical Islamic extremists. When a tragedy strikes cities like London, Paris, or New York, the world takes notice. We come together, grieve together, and vow to prevent such horrors from ever reaching our communities again.
However, these tragedies occur more frequently than we might think. The suffering we endure is but a glimpse of the harsh realities faced in other parts of the globe. In regions where radical Islamic militants are a constant presence, terror is not an occasional disruption—it is an ever-present danger.
10. The Slaughter of the Al-Shaitat Tribe: Syria

In 2014, a tribe in Abu Hamam, Syria, attempted to stand against ISIS—and tragically paid the ultimate price with the lives of over 900 individuals.
The conflict began when a man was pulled into the streets and publicly whipped by ISIS for the 'crime' of smoking a cigarette. His brother, outraged by the unjust punishment, grabbed a gun and shot the next ISIS patrolman he encountered.
ISIS captured the shooter and publicly executed him, attempting to send a strong message to the Al-Shaitat that they needed to comply. However, the people did not back down. Instead, they rose up against the Islamic State and drove ISIS forces out of their town.
But ISIS returned soon after with reinforcements. They bombarded the town with artillery for three days before advancing. Then, they rounded up every male over the age of 15 and executed them all.
Some were beheaded, others were shot, and some were even crucified. ISIS would line up victims along the road and behead them one by one. Afterward, they would mock the remaining living by swinging the severed heads of their friends in front of them, threatening that they would be next.
The few survivors who managed to escape have been left with deep hatred. 'Now we hate everyone who prays,' one survivor confessed. 'We will never forget and will seek our vengeance.'
9. The Peshawar School Massacre: Pakistan

On December 16, 2014, at 10:00 a.m., seven Taliban militants stormed a public school, moving through the classrooms, and mercilessly slaughtered children.
The attackers entered through the back door, wearing suicide vests and armed with automatic rifles. They pretended to take hostages, assuring the children they wouldn’t be harmed—but it was a ruse to prevent them from fleeing. They opened fire indiscriminately on every child they encountered, some as young as eight years old.
The children who survived endured unimaginable horrors to make it out alive. A 13-year-old girl played dead, lying next to her deceased classmates, hoping the terrorists would overlook her. She was the only one in her class to survive.
The terrorists targeted the school because many of the children's parents were soldiers. 'The government is targeting our families,' Al-Qaeda declared. 'We want them to feel the pain.' However, no matter the reason, there was absolutely no excuse for their actions. By the end of that tragic day, nine adults and 132 children had lost their lives.
8. The Sana’a Mosque Bombing: Yemen

On March 20, 2015, hundreds gathered at the Badr Mosque in Sana’a, Yemen, to pray. They were followers of the Houthi faith, a group embroiled in conflict with Shia extremists. Tragically, more than a hundred of them would die for their beliefs.
While the faithful were in prayer, a man attempting to enter the mosque was stopped at the gate. The guards had spotted explosives strapped to his vest. They tried to intervene, but he detonated the vest. As people inside tried to flee, a second bomber, hidden among the crowd, exploded his vest, killing dozens.
Two more bombers struck another mosque on the same day. In total, 137 lives were lost, and 345 people were injured while they were peacefully gathered to pray. The government attributed the attack to Al-Qaeda, though ISIS claimed responsibility, warning that this was just 'the beginning of a coming flood.'
7. The Baga Massacre: Nigeria

On July 1, 2015, Boko Haram terrorists entered a mosque in Baga, Nigeria, armed with automatic rifles, and began firing indiscriminately. They deemed the mosque too moderate and accepting, and so they killed everyone inside—men, women, and children alike. By the time the shooting stopped, 145 people had been murdered.
This was a horrific event, but it was just one of many in a week-long series of massacres carried out by Boko Haram across the country. Having joined forces with ISIS, Boko Haram was instructed to spread chaos and bloodshed during Ramadan. Over a span of several days, they killed more than 200 people.
The day before, they attacked a village, murdering 48 people. The day after, they sent young girls into the marketplace as suicide bombers. The following day, a Boko Haram militia abducted men who had refused to join them, dragged them to the prayer grounds, and slaughtered them like animals.
6. The Ankara Bombings: Turkey

On October 15, 2015, people across Turkey gathered to hold a peace rally. The Turkish government had announced its return to war with Kurdish rebels, and Kurds, their sympathizers, and activists united to demand peace for their country.
The protesters were holding hands and singing outside the central train station when two explosions rocked the area. Two suicide bombers had detonated their devices, choosing to sacrifice their own lives in order to murder young people advocating for peace.
"We fell to the ground, and there was blood and flesh splattered everywhere," recalled one survivor. "When I turned around, I saw a lake of blood and lifeless bodies. I couldn’t tell who had survived."
When the police arrived, some witnesses claimed they threw tear gas into the crowd, fearing there might be another bomber among them. Some even alleged that officers prevented people from helping their injured friends and obstructed ambulances from reaching the victims.
Once the chaos subsided and the gas cleared, 95 people had lost their lives, and 246 others were injured in what became Turkey's deadliest terrorist attack in history.
5. The Ouagadougou Attack: Burkina Faso

On the night of January 15, 2016, Al-Qaeda militants stormed a hotel in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso's capital, holding everyone inside hostage for hours.
The hotel in question was The Splendid Hotel, one of the city's largest and a favorite of foreign visitors. The terrorists began by attacking a café across from the hotel before moving inside. Some militants captured the guests and held them hostage, while others rigged the building with explosives, complicating efforts by Special Forces to intervene.
Most of the hostages were locals, but foreigners were executed on the spot. A survivor recalled seeing the attackers walking through the hallways, shooting anyone who showed signs of life. Others reported that the assailants appeared to be specifically targeting white individuals.
By the time the hostages were rescued the following morning, 29 people had been killed, and of the 126 who survived, half had sustained serious injuries.
4. The Lido Beach Attack: Somalia

On January 21, 2016, a Somali couple was hosting their wedding celebration at Lido Beach, expecting the day to mark the beginning of a long and joyful life together. Instead, their wedding day ended in tragedy, as Islamist Al-Shabaab militants launched an attack that killed them and 18 other individuals.
The assault began at 7:30 p.m., when a car bomb exploded outside the Beach View Restaurant, signaling the start of the attack. Gunmen opened fire indiscriminately at the crowd on the beach. Amid the ensuing chaos, the terrorists stormed the restaurant and fired upon the people inside. They barricaded themselves inside the building, and Somali troops surrounded it, attempting to neutralize the attackers.
This act of terror was not an isolated event. Only a week before, Al-Shabaab militants had launched an assault on a Kenyan military base in Somalia, resulting in the deaths of 143 soldiers. They detonated a car bomb within the base and carried out a full-scale attack.
3. The Sehwan Suicide Bombing: Pakistan

On February 17, 2017, hundreds of people gathered at the shrine of Lal Shahbaz Qalandar, the philosopher-poet revered in Sufi traditions, to commemorate the Urs festival, which marks the anniversary of his death. Tragically, their celebration was interrupted by a terrorist attack.
As the crowd danced and celebrated, a terrorist threw a grenade into the gathering. While the grenade failed to explode, the attacker had another device hidden in his jacket, filled with ball bearings designed to scatter shrapnel. He detonated the bomb in the midst of the crowd, killing himself and 83 others, including 20 children.
This bombing was part of a larger wave of attacks across Pakistan that week, which claimed at least 99 lives. ISIS claimed responsibility for each of these attacks, openly boasting on their website about their role in the killings of innocent people.
The next morning, the people of Sehwan returned to the shrine and resumed their celebrations, undeterred by the previous day's tragic events. “They have been bombing shrines for long,” a man attending the celebration told reporters. “If they think this blast will instill fear in the Sufi community, they are gravely mistaken.”
2. The Kabul Hospital Attack: Afghanistan

On March 8, 2017, three terrorists managed to infiltrate a military hospital in Afghanistan, smuggling AK-47 rifles hidden inside white doctor’s coats. They posed as medics to prepare for an attack.
The assault began with a suicide bomber detonating inside the hospital, signaling the gunmen to spring into action. Armed with AK-47s, they fired indiscriminately at vulnerable patients in their beds, as well as the doctors and nurses who tried to assist them.
One survivor, Zia Zabuli, shared his harrowing experience of barricading himself and three other patients in a room. As they heard the terrorist attempt to break through the door, they could only pray in silence for their lives. Miraculously, the barricade held, and the terrorist moved on.
Special forces were forced to engage in a lengthy battle to eliminate the terrorists. Sadly, before they could secure the area, the attackers had already killed 30 individuals, including wounded soldiers and the people trying to aid them.
1. Karrada Bombings: Iraq

On July 3, 2016, one of Iraq's most devastating terrorist attacks struck a shopping district in Baghdad. As the people celebrated the end of Ramadan with shopping, dining, and festivities, few were aware that ISIS had vowed to unleash a Ramadan filled with bloodshed.
ISIS believed that the people were breaking their fast too soon, and in their twisted ideology, this justified the brutal massacre of hundreds of innocent civilians. A terrorist drove a truck full of explosives to the mall and detonated it, shattering the windows, collapsing the walls, and leaving only a skeletal frame behind.
Rescue teams worked tirelessly to sift through the debris in search of survivors and bodies. Tragically, for many, it was already too late. 292 lives were lost in the attack. This was not an isolated event—on the same day, another bombing took five more lives, and just two months earlier, a similar attack claimed over a hundred victims.
