Florida often gets a bad reputation, and the 'Florida Man' phenomenon is a major part of that global mockery. Just type 'Florida Man' and your birthdate into a search engine, and you'll be greeted with bizarre headlines about individuals who, for instance, 'attacked his daughter with pizza,' confused a bank for a 'Taco Bell drive-thru,' or drove a 'Ferrari into a lake' after receiving instructions from Jesus.
Like any place, Florida isn’t entirely filled with absurdity, and most of its people are far from foolish. To challenge the negative stereotypes, here are ten examples of 'Florida Men' doing good and defying expectations.
10. Florida Man Mowed for a Good Cause

Mowing the lawn on a Saturday morning can be a tedious task—repeated every week, it involves exertion, wasted time, and the back-and-forth motion that seems never-ending. On average, Americans can spend anywhere from seven to forty-seven days in their lifetime mowing their lawns. Now, imagine spending a significant portion of that time in one painful, spine-crushing stretch.
And that’s exactly what one Florida Man did. Chip Hawthorne took his lawnmower on a 130-mile trek from Titusville to Spring Hill, spending approximately 15 hours on his garden vehicle—all for a charitable cause. The aim of this 'Mowathon' was to raise $500,000 to benefit the West Orange Habitat for Humanity. While he didn’t reach his financial goal, he certainly made an impression on the Florida Man legacy.
9. Florida Man Rescues a Bear

Does a bear relieve itself in the woods? Sometimes. Other times, it wanders into neighborhoods where it could either be shot by locals or even harm an elderly woman on her way to Walmart. Neither outcome is desirable. When an adult male black bear ventured into the Alligator Point area, animal control was summoned. They responded by tranquilizing the bear with a sedative.
In a desperate move, the bear plunged into the Gulf of Mexico and began swimming. Adam Warwick, a wildlife conservationist, did what any brave Florida Man would do. He dove in after it, risking his own safety to intercept its path and attempt to steer it back toward land, preventing it from drowning once the sedative took effect. He ultimately had to help the bear keep its head above water and assisted in floating it back to the shore. A true national hero.
8. Florida Man Walks Away from Wealth

It's hard to deny—$20,000 is a significant amount of money. Whether you're scraping by in a tough situation or managing a carwash business while planning for the future, that kind of cash can go a long way. James Stratford, who manages such a business, ended up saving a local entrepreneur from heavy financial losses and possibly even from losing his business altogether.
Russell Mir arrived at the carwash to get his truck cleaned, but he had forgotten to deposit three bags of money at the bank and instructed the staff to discard everything inside the vehicle. Realizing his mistake, Mir called Stratford and returned to the scene. After searching together, Stratford, a father of five, and Mir found only one bag of cash in a dumpster. Stratford pressed on, eventually finding the other two bags. For his persistence, Stratford was rewarded with unlimited Slurpees for a year, or anything else he wanted at Mir's service stations. Perhaps he should have kept the cash.
7. Florida Man Rescues a Manatee

When Florida Man Don Swartz noticed something floating in the water that looked like the last person standing after a wild night out, he immediately jumped into action. The manatee, which was believed to have been poisoned by red tide, was followed around the harbor until it turned over onto its back.
Realizing that the turn likely meant the manatee was in danger of drowning, Don leapt into the water and held the creature up, keeping its nostrils above the surface like a vigilant alligator. Now that's what you call being a man. For forty minutes, Don kept the struggling animal afloat until the professionals arrived. Apparently, the large sea mammal had ingested a dangerous amount of toxic red tide seagrass. Hah, is that what they’re calling it these days?
6. Florida Man Saves Children from Fire

If you've seen Zoolander, you know two things: (1) Orange Mocha Frappucinos can lift your spirits, and (2) a fire at a gas station can lead to devastating consequences. That's exactly what happened when a fire broke out at a service station in Palm Harbor, leaving a woman in grave danger and her two children caught in the chaos.
Without hesitation, and with no thought of personal gain, Jared Pierson, a local homeless Florida Man, rushed into the smoke and flames to rescue the two children, risking his life in the process. He later said that had he known the mother was also in danger, he would have likely done even more.
5. Florida Man Helps a Turtle Cross the Road

We've all heard the fable of the rabbit and the tortoise. The rabbit got overconfident and took a nap, while the steady tortoise ended up winning the race. In Naples, a little turtle was trying to cross a busy road, but his slow pace wasn't helping. He had no quick legs to make the crossing.
A nameless Florida Man had other plans. He jumped out of his truck and carried the little guy, Leonardo, safely to the other side of the road. True heroes don’t need names; they live in the hearts and minds of those who witness their kindness. This man will be remembered by all who saw him stop traffic just to protect a piece of nature. Our respects go to Master Splinter.
4. Florida Man Saves Someone Having a Seizure

Heroes come in all shapes and sizes. They don’t always wear capes or have muscular physiques. When fate calls, they might even wear steel-toed boots to protect their feet while doing their day jobs. One morning, Tony Neil was mowing his lawn when he noticed his neighbor having a seizure while in his car.
As the car kept moving, Tony sprang into action like a hero straight out of a comic book. He tried to stop the car, narrowly avoiding having his foot crushed—thanks to his legendary steel boots. Eventually, the car came to a halt against a tree. With no way to get inside, Tony had someone call 911, and when help arrived, they pulled the man to safety. The victim survived and thanked Tony for his quick thinking. I can only imagine them sitting in the back of an ambulance, tying up loose ends before the credits roll.
3. Florida Man Saves Puppy

If movies and documentaries have taught us anything, it’s that the worst possible crime is letting the dog (or cat) die. The mother can fall off a cliff, the father can get shot, but if the dog dies, that’s the end of everything. One Florida Man lives and breathes by this rule, and he will never let the dog down.
Richard Willbanks, a retiree from Florida, was walking his dog Gunner when disaster struck—a gator attacked and dragged Gunner into the water. Alligators are infamous for drowning their prey, and Gunner was no exception. Without hesitation, Richard dove into the water and went after the gator, eventually managing to pull it out with Gunner still in its jaws. After a fierce struggle, Richard freed Gunner, and despite the chaos, his cigar never left his mouth. A true Florida Man, through and through.
2. Florida Man Rescues People from Afghanistan

The U.S. Armed Forces have been stationed in the Middle East for as long as anyone can remember, working tirelessly to uphold peace in the region. A controversial withdrawal from the area left many Americans stranded. In August 2021, as the U.S. wrapped up its campaign and the Taliban seized control, a large-scale evacuation of military personnel and civilians began.
A staggering 120,000 individuals were evacuated, with private organizations offering a helping hand. To make sure things went smoothly, the U.S. government found a secret weapon: enter Florida Man. Zach Van Meter, a private equity investor from Naples, was called upon after a former U.S. commando reached out. Zach’s team, the Commercial Task Force, successfully evacuated at least 15,000 people. That’s a massive impact from far away.
1. Florida Man Saves Drowning Child

In Delray Beach, FL, a potential tragedy on Mother’s Day almost unfolded when one of a mother’s twin daughters was swept out to sea by a rip current. Logan Gaynor, working at a local resort, heard the screams and rushed to investigate. Without a second thought, he dove into action, just like in Logan’s Run, charging into the water to help.
Logan managed to pull the girl to safety without anyone getting hurt. Later, he was recognized with a lifesaving award from the local fire department, leaving the family to reflect on all the ‘what-ifs.’ What if Logan hadn’t been there? What if he had been caught in the current himself? What if they never dared to enter the ocean again?
