As the age-old saying goes, “Nothing is certain except death and taxes.” Most of us dream of a long, healthy existence before we meet our final fate. In an ideal world, we’d be free from illness and accidents, slipping into eternal rest without a moment’s notice.
But unfortunately, this is far from a perfect world. Every day, terrible diseases and tragic accidents claim lives. Below, we share a glimpse of some incredibly bizarre ways real people have met their end.
10. Death by Dog Food

Sometimes, our deep affection for animals can lead to unexpected consequences. In the end, these two women might have been better off without pet ownership altogether.
Melany Paula Campos’s sister returned home one day and immediately sensed that something was off. The neighbors greeted her to report that her dogs had been barking uncontrollably for hours without stopping.
Upon investigating to find out what was wrong, she discovered her sister buried under four massive bags of dog food. Apparently, while attempting to feed the 40 dogs they had taken in, the bags toppled over and suffocated her under their weight.
In another tragic instance of dog feeding gone terribly wrong, Carol Williams tried to feed her pet dog after indulging in too many drinks. As she bent down to fill the dog's bowl, her intoxication overwhelmed her, and she fell face-first into the bowl.
As if being smothered by dog food wasn’t tragic enough, the edge of the bowl pressed into her neck, and she eventually passed away. When discovered, her blood alcohol level was found to be three times the legal limit.
9. Death By Pecking

In another unsettling tale of individuals betrayed by their own animals, a farmer named Frans Jaumotte was discovered dead on his farm. Authorities were eager to uncover the cause of his apparent mutilation and death.
During their investigation, they found that there was no chicken feed anywhere on the property. His 200 chickens, it seemed, did not take kindly to this.
Driven by their instinct for survival, the chickens took matters into their own beaks. They attacked Jaumotte, pecking out his eyes and heart in a desperate attempt to stay alive. It became a matter of survival — it was either him or them, and they were far more numerous.
8. Death By Boiling

David Allen Kirwan and his friend Ronald Ratliff set out to enjoy a peaceful day in Yellowstone National Park. After parking their car to take a quick look at one of the springs, Ratliff’s dog decided to join them and escaped from the vehicle.
In an unexpected move, the excited dog jumped straight into the spring they were observing. The water temperature was later found to be a scorching 94 degrees Celsius (202 °F).
The poor dog began yelping in pain almost immediately. Despite warnings from other visitors to stay out of the hot spring, Kirwan acted impulsively and dove in headfirst to rescue the dog. He managed to grab the dog and tried his best to save him, but eventually, he had to release the animal and focus on escaping the spring himself.
His friend Ratliff managed to pull him out of the spring, though he suffered second-degree burns on the bottoms of his feet in the process. Another visitor helped Kirwan to the sidewalk.
He reportedly said, “That was stupid. How bad am I?” Then he added, “That was a stupid thing I did.”
He was so severely burned that his entire body was disfigured, leaving him blind and with most of his skin peeling off. Another well-meaning bystander tried to help by removing his shoes but had to stop when his skin came off along with them. Rangers later discovered two large pieces of skin near the spring, shaped like hands.
Kirwan was rushed to a clinic where a burn specialist treated him. Although he was conscious and appeared to be in no pain, the extent of his injuries proved fatal. The burns were simply too severe to overcome. Ironically, there were brochures in their vehicle warning about the dangers of the park, but they hadn't bothered to read them.
Sadly, the dog could not be rescued and perished in the spring.
7. Death By Consumption

Humans may pride themselves on being at the top of the food chain, but occasionally, nature has a way of humbling that belief.
In 1984, a young woman named Brigitta Claudia Fredenhagen learned this lesson the hard way. Despite warnings about bears and the dangers of hiking and camping alone in Yellowstone National Park, she went ahead with her adventure. When she missed a scheduled meeting with her brother, he reported her missing to the local rangers.
When the rangers arrived at her campsite, they made some horrifying discoveries. The tent had been torn apart, and they found remnants of hair, scalp, muscle, bone, and tissue. As the search continued, they uncovered a piece of her lip, additional tissue, and bloody clothes. When they eventually found her body, they realized a bear had consumed much of her.
It was believed that the bear had torn open the tent and dragged her out by either the side of her neck or the top of her head while she slept. There were no signs of a struggle, leading them to believe she died quickly.
Strangely, she had written in a journal at her campsite that she had taken “all precautions” to stay safe.
6. Death By Radio Contest

In an effort to win a contest for her children, Jennifer Strange entered the 'Hold Your Wee for a Wii' event at a local radio station. What was supposed to be a fun and lighthearted competition tragically ended in disaster.
The objective was simple: contestants had to drink as much water as possible without using the bathroom. The winner would receive a Wii gaming console. It seemed harmless enough, right?
After the event, Jennifer called her workplace, crying, to inform them that she wouldn’t be returning due to an intense headache. Hours later, her mother found her dead at home.
The coroner concluded that Jennifer’s death was likely caused by 'water intoxication' or hyponatremia, a condition where the body’s sodium levels drop dangerously low, causing the brain to swell and push against the skull. This painful condition leads to nausea, vomiting, weakness, and, in severe cases, seizures, coma, or even death.
5. Death By Flying Lawnmower

One of the last things you'd expect at a New York Jets football game is to have a flying lawnmower strike you in the head. Sadly for John Bowen, this bizarre accident became a grim reality in 1979.
During the halftime show, model plane enthusiasts were putting on a display for the crowd, featuring aerial dogfights with planes in unique shapes. Among them was a model plane dubbed the 'Flying Lawnmower.' It was around 0.61 meters (2 feet) long and constructed primarily from metal.
Tragically, the plane malfunctioned and crashed into the stands, hitting both John Bowen and Kevin Rourke in the head. Bowen underwent surgery to treat a severe wound but later succumbed to his injuries. Rourke sustained a concussion but fortunately made a full recovery.
Ironically, the halftime performance was organized by the Electronic Eagles of the Radio Controlled Association of Greater New York to promote the safety of the sport.
4. Death By Baseball

Generally, one might assume that baseball is less of a 'contact sport' and not as violent as many other games. However, that's not entirely the case.
Over the years, there have been numerous fatalities tied to the game—whether it's a player being struck in the head by a pitched ball or hit in the chest near the heart. Fans have also been injured or killed from falling out of the stands.
In one tragic incident, the Goldblooms, an elderly couple who were regulars at Dodgers games, went to the stadium to celebrate Linda’s 79th birthday and their 59th wedding anniversary. While enjoying the game, a ball flew just above the protective netting and struck Linda Goldbloom in the head.
Ushers rushed to her aid, but after indicating she was unwell, she was placed in an ambulance. She began vomiting and was quickly rushed to the hospital.
After undergoing emergency surgery, she was placed on a ventilator. Mrs. Goldbloom remained unresponsive for three days before passing away from her injuries. She was laid to rest about 16 kilometers (10 miles) from the stadium and team she had adored so much.
3. Death By Wood Chipper

One of the most horrifying and gruesome ways to die must be falling into a wood chipper while fully conscious and aware of your impending fate.
There have been numerous reports of such incidents. Some individuals were severely injured, while others tragically lost their lives. In one case, a landscaper somehow fell into the teeth of the wood chipper he had been using that day. His entire body was pulled through, leaving behind a grisly scene.
Rescue workers had to carefully clean the scene to recover all of the victim's remains. Witnessing such a traumatic event is something that would likely stay with someone for the rest of their life.
2. Death By Explosion

It’s generally unwise to cross a rival motorcycle gang. Depending on the gravity of the dispute, retaliation could be imminent. Two gang members were on their way to execute a dangerous plan when their recklessness ended in their deaths.
Apparently, the homemade bomb they planned to use against a rival gang member was stored in the car's center console. What exactly went wrong is unclear, but the bomb detonated during transit, killing both of them instantly.
The explosion was so intense that it tore off the car’s roof and blew out its front doors. One of the men was blasted into the gutter of an elderly woman's house, while debris was scattered across a 35-meter (115 ft) radius. Miraculously, the other man was found slumped over, still strapped into his seat inside the vehicle.
1. Death By Toilet

Convicted murderer Michael Anderson Godwin unknowingly saved taxpayers a considerable amount of money at a correctional facility in Columbia, South Carolina, in 1989.
After his death sentence was overturned on appeal, he came to terms with life as a long-term inmate. At just 28 years old, he was expected to spend many more years behind bars.
One fateful day, he attempted to fix a set of earphones connected to his television. While sitting on the steel toilet in his cell, he accidentally bit down on one of the earphone wires. The outcome was tragically fatal.
The same prisoner who had previously escaped the electric chair unintentionally carried out his own death sentence via electrocution. The irony was undeniable.
