The National Park System of the United States spans over 84 million acres of diverse terrains, including forests, mountains, deserts, and protected wilderness areas. This vast expanse is the perfect setting for unexplained phenomena, with numerous cases remaining without clear answers.
From hikers disappearing without a trace to bizarre creatures spotted deep in the woods and entire groups vanishing mysteriously, the national parks have earned a reputation for their strange and unsettling energy.
10. The Devil's Den

In 1946, an eight-year-old girl named Katherine Van Alst went missing while camping with her family at Devil’s Den State Park. After six days, she was discovered sitting in a cave nearly 48 kilometers (30 miles) away and 183 meters (600 feet) higher than the spot where she had vanished.
What baffled the search party was Katherine's unusual calmness when they found her. She reportedly walked out of the cave and simply said, “Here I am.”
The mystery remains: How did an eight-year-old girl, dressed only in a bathing suit, manage to cover such a vast distance without injury? Some believe something may have been chasing her, prompting her to wander far from the camp. While it’s unlikely she encountered a radioactive Bigfoot, the situation remains undeniably eerie, with something dark possibly lurking within Devil’s Den park.
9. The Haunted Battleground

Gettysburg National Military Park was the location of one of the bloodiest confrontations during the Civil War. Over the course of three days of brutal fighting, casualties exceeded 50,000, and the streams were said to have been stained red with blood. Today, the park is a hotspot for paranormal activity, with numerous reports of sightings every year. Many visitors claim to have seen figures in Civil War-era uniforms, wielding antique weapons.
Ray Hock, a Civil War reenactor, shared an eerie experience where he and a friend were approached by a tall, worn-out figure who handed them some cartridges. However, when they looked up, the figure had vanished. The cartridges were later verified as authentic Civil War issue from 1863. Others report spotting a ghostly figure, appearing as a misty shape, lying facedown in a bush, convulsing from apparent pain.
While some of these experiences might be explained logically, many still remain unexplained. It’s possible that the true nature of the haunting at Gettysburg National Military Park may never be uncovered, leaving the question: Does the army of the dead truly haunt the grounds of this historic site?
8. Mount Shasta

Mount Shasta, nestled within California’s Shasta-Trinity National Forest, is a land steeped in mystery and legend. The indigenous tribes who once inhabited the area regarded the mountain as the center of creation, while New Age followers believe it to be the primary source of spiritual energy on Earth.
In 1931, a massive forest fire ravaged the mountain, but was mysteriously halted by a dense fog that appeared out of nowhere. It was later discovered that the fog seemed to have stopped the fire precisely along the line of the Central Time Zone. This strange event remains scientifically unexplained.
Mount Shasta is also believed by some to be a gateway to the fifth dimension and a source of energy for extraterrestrial spacecraft. Local villagers have reported sightings of large humanoid figures watching them from afar. These encounters are often linked to the Karuk legend of the 'big people,' a race of superhuman beings who escaped the fall of their city, Lemuria, and are said to be behind the mysterious phenomena surrounding the mountain.
7. Hopi Keeper of Death

Grand Canyon National Park, one of the most iconic parks in the world, spans nearly 5,000 square kilometers (1,930 square miles) and is a place steeped in mysteries and ancient lore.
The Hopi tribe, one of the groups that once inhabited the Grand Canyon, was made up of elders, workers, and hunters. They flourished in the region, with some historians speculating that the tribe constructed a hidden underground citadel within the canyon's depths.
The Hopi tribe revered Maasaw, the god of death, who was believed to dwell in a specific part of the Grand Canyon. According to legend, if strange lights begin to approach you from within the canyon at night or if you hear the faint sound of rocks tapping together, it’s said that Maasaw is coming for you.
Though this may seem like mere superstition, many people have reported feeling nauseous and anxious after hearing the clanging of rocks in the area. Even though the region is relatively flat and not considered dangerous, numerous accidents have occurred in this mysterious spot.
6. Strange Structures

Santa Fe National Forest has recently become the site of baffling occurrences, with wooden structures inexplicably appearing in the woods. These structures are said to be composed of over 1,000 pieces of wood, some towering more than 6 meters (20 feet) high and reaching diameters of 4 meters (12 feet).
Constructed from fallen trees and branches, these strange structures have left forest officials bewildered. They express concern that the wood could spark a forest fire, warning that anyone caught building these cone-shaped formations could face a fine of $5,000 or up to six months in jail.
The identity of the builders remains a mystery, and no one knows their motives. However, some have speculated that these structures may be the work of a secretive cult, using the wooden formations for ritualistic purposes.
5. Mysterious Force in the Washington Woods

On January 27, 2018, a powerful unseen force knocked down more than 100 trees in Olympic National Park. While experts initially attributed the destruction to strong winds or another meteorological phenomenon, no weather data indicated anything unusual that day.
The night before, park visitors reported hearing a tremendous rumbling noise. This led officials to speculate that a landslide or a minor earthquake might have occurred, but there was no conclusive evidence to support these theories.
In some areas, entire trees were uprooted, while in others, trees were broken and leaning at extreme angles. The cause behind the mass tree fall remains a mystery, and many have turned to more unconventional explanations. While it's safe to rule out Bigfoot's involvement, we still lack a definitive explanation for the events in the Washington woods.
4. The Yosemite UFO

On the evening of September 19, 2002, an unusual disk-shaped object appeared in the sky over Yosemite National Park. Several witnesses managed to capture footage of the so-called alien craft, and it is now considered one of the most compelling pieces of UFO video evidence.
Shortly after a peculiar object was observed in the sky, air force jets were dispatched to patrol the area. However, the pilots failed to find anything unusual. This event is part of a series of strange occurrences in Yosemite National Park, where many visitors have reported seeing unusual lights in the sky.
Despite the numerous reports of strange lights, many experts have dismissed them as meteors or simple optical illusions. To date, the public is unaware of any official investigation into the sightings, leaving the true nature of what was witnessed in Yosemite that evening a mystery.
3. Hawaiian Fireballs

Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, located on the Big Island of Hawaii, is renowned for its incredible natural beauty. Yet, it is also a place rife with superstition and mystery, with strange phenomena adding to its already awe-inspiring allure.
On the night of March 27, 1998, a brilliant blue explosion of light illuminated the sky, followed by a deafening roar. Hundreds of locals reported the event, as did a pilot who witnessed the spectacle from the air. The pilot claimed the object came within 3 kilometers (2 miles) of his plane, causing a sudden and dramatic rise in temperature, a claim corroborated by others aboard.
Authorities later identified the explosion as a meteor, but many locals on Hawaii were skeptical. Some believed that the event was caused by an angered Hawaiian god, awakened by humanity's mistreatment of the world.
This event is just one of many strange occurrences on the island of Hawaii. Numerous visitors to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park have reported odd happenings after taking rocks from the park. After returning home, many of these individuals experienced bizarre events, leading them to believe that the rocks were cursed.
In addition to the mysterious rocks, other visitors have reported encountering spirits during late-night walks or witnessing strange hazy figures in the distance. While the origins of these reports remain unexplained, one thing is clear: Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is undeniably a hotbed of mystery.
2. Smoky Mountains Mystery

The Smoky Mountains, which span the border of Tennessee and North Carolina, are home to over 187,000 acres of wilderness. This park has gained notoriety due to the numerous disappearances that have occurred over the years. One of the most peculiar cases was that of Dennis Martin in 1969.
On a hiking trip in the Smoky Mountains, six-year-old Dennis Martin and his three brothers decided to surprise their parents by jumping out at them as they passed by. The three brothers went one way, while Dennis took a different route, hoping to stand out in his bright red shirt.
When the time came, the three brothers jumped out to surprise their parents, but Dennis was nowhere to be found. They thought he might have missed his cue, so they called his name and waited, but still, he did not appear.
The search for Dennis began soon after, but no trace of him was found. The family called in the search-and-rescue unit, but despite weeks of searching, Dennis remained missing. Over time, people reported seeing a small boy walking through the woods, and some even claimed to have found small pieces of clothing, but Dennis was never located.
Many believe Dennis was either kidnapped or taken by a wild animal, but there is no solid evidence to back these theories. Remarkably, he left behind no trace. To this day, his disappearance remains a mystery, and while the authorities presume he is dead, his case is just one of several strange occurrences in the Smoky Mountains.
1. The Missing Germans

Death Valley National Park, a vast expanse of desolate land stretching over three million acres from California to Nevada, became the backdrop of a mysterious disappearance in July 1996. On a scorching day with temperatures reaching 49°C (120°F), four German tourists vanished without a trace. Their last known location was a small ghost town, where they had left a note in the visitor’s book reading, 'We are going through the pass.' Rangers believe this refers to the Mengel Pass.
When the family failed to board their return flight, Interpol was notified. On August 14, they were officially reported as missing. Their rental van was discovered abandoned on October 23, with three flat tires. Strangely, no wallets or passports were ever found, leading many to suspect that the group had been kidnapped.
In 2009, human bones were found in Death Valley. Authorities stated that they were 'fairly certain' the remains belonged to the missing Germans. Since then, however, there have been no further updates on the case.
