While Hollywood often spins tales of the underdog triumphing, the truth is, in real life, the 'little guy' doesn't always win. It's frequently the one with more wealth, a larger force, or stronger connections who comes out on top. That's why it's so refreshing when we hear stories of those at the bottom who, instead of accepting defeat, stand up to their oppressors and fight back. Here are ten such empowering stories:
10. Kung Fu

What happened: Indian Women Empower Themselves by Learning Kung Fu to Defend Against Abusers
As I’ve mentioned previously, being born a female in India is far from easy. With child marriage, shockingly high rape statistics, and an abundance of stories of abuse, the culture often sees the absence of a Y chromosome as an invitation for harassment. This makes the story of the Red Brigade even more remarkable.
Formed in 2011, the Red Brigade is a group of 100 fierce, karate-trained young women who patrol the streets of Lucknow, delivering justice to local harassers. These 'girls'—ranging in age from 11 to 24—are often tasked with confronting men twice their age. What's even more impressive is that their approach is focused less on violence and more on shaming. A common punishment for a man caught groping is to be dragged into the street, held down, and pelted with shoes while bystanders watch and laugh. And it’s working. As of April 2013, the Red Brigade plans to expand their efforts to every ward in the city.
9. Terror

What happened: Libyans Confront Terror (and succeed)
If you follow politics even a little, you’ve likely heard of Benghazi. It became the epicenter of a political catastrophe, including the tragic death of the American ambassador at the hands of terrorists. Despite calls for action from all sides, the Libyan government did nothing, leaving the responsibility to the Libyan people.
On 21 September 2012, the people of Benghazi had finally had enough of terrorists controlling their city, and they stormed the militants’ compound. Let’s be clear: these were ordinary, unarmed citizens taking on a fortified base with enough weaponry to overpower any army. And they succeeded. In an intense 48-hour battle, these brave protestors managed to drive the Ansar al-Sharia terror group out of their city, making the Libyan army look weak in comparison. While Benghazi may not be completely safe now, for one weekend in September, the terrorists were the ones who felt terror. No matter how you look at it, that’s a victory to remember.
8. Bullied Girl

What happened: Anonymous Rises Up for a Bullied Girl
Depending on their mood, Anonymous can be either hilarious or downright terrifying. But every once in a while, they come together to do something so incredible that you can't help but stop and applaud.
In 2011, 15-year-old Rehtaeh Parsons went to a party, got drunk, and was sexually assaulted by four high school students. Over the following year, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) mishandled the investigation so poorly that no one was ever arrested. Eventually, the relentless bullying and humiliation took a toll, and Parsons tragically took her own life. This heartbreaking story could have ended there, but Anonymous decided to step in.
Within just two hours of deciding to act, they uncovered the identities of two of the rapists and gathered a substantial amount of evidence against them. In a brilliant move, they withheld the names, demanding that the RCMP reopen the case and actually do their job. As of now, that’s exactly what’s happened. While it’s too soon to say for sure if justice will be served, it’s certainly a step up from the RCMP’s initial ‘no evidence’ conclusion.
7. McDonald’s Mutilation

What happened: Two Hippies Expose McDonald’s
While most of us can brush off an insult without causing a scene, McDonald’s executives are clearly not ‘most of us’. When they discovered a group of unkempt environmentalists distributing a low-circulation pamphlet criticizing their brand, they had their lawyers attempt to intimidate them with legal threats. That was a big mistake.
Instead of backing down like McDonald’s expected, two members of the group chose to take the case to court. McDonald’s, apparently unaware of the story of David and Goliath, deployed its top legal team and spent millions, only to realize that most of the claims in the ‘offensive’ pamphlet were undeniably true. This set off a two-decade-long legal battle, during which McDonald’s wasted millions and endured continuous bad press, all for a partial victory and a £20,000 award the defendants couldn’t pay. To make matters worse, the European Court of Human Rights ruled in favor of the defendants, awarding them £57,000, meaning McDonald’s not only lost but ended up with less money than the penniless hippies it was trying to sue.
6. Spam King

What happened: The ‘Spam King’ Gets His Comeuppance
Meet Alan Ralsky; if you were online around 2002, he almost certainly filled your inbox with a mind-boggling amount of spam. He single-handedly made the internet a much worse place to be, and, even worse, he made millions doing it. Then, he made the fatal mistake of bragging about it.
Thanks to the power of modern communication, his boast didn’t go unnoticed for long. In a wave of digital revenge, Slashdot tracked down his home address, posted it online, and the fun truly began. Before long, the ‘spam king’ was bombarded with a mountain of junk mail: catalogs, charity solicitations, adult videos, and every other type of unwanted mail imaginable. The best part? Ralsky got so enraged that he threatened legal action against the pranksters, prompting the internet to collectively laugh and send even more catalogs. Eventually, his outrage caught the attention of the FBI, who arrested him for violating anti-spam laws.
5. Life

What happened: Steven Slater vs. Life
Anyone who's ever worked a low-paying job will know exactly who I’m talking about when I mention ‘that customer.’ The one who berated you for taking too long, or made it their mission to make you feel worthless. This one's for you.
In 2010, Steven Slater was done. His mom was sick, he wasn’t doing great, and his job as a flight attendant was hardly fulfilling. So when a passenger started yelling at him for no reason, he did what many of us can only fantasize about doing.
First, Slater took to the plane’s intercom and let the passenger have it in front of everyone. Then, he grabbed a beer, deployed the emergency slide, and jumped off the plane, quitting his job in the most epic way possible. When the police showed up at his house hours later, he greeted them with a smile and was arrested willingly. The outcome? Slater had to pay his former employer $10,000, but the incident turned his life around and even landed him a book deal. So, to the question ‘Was it worth it?’ the answer is a loud, enthusiastic ‘hell yeah.’
4. College Thief

What happened: College Thief Gets Humiliated on a Global Scale
Some of you might be familiar with the phrase ‘don’t steal computers from people who know their way around a computer.’ If not, you might want to watch the clip above for a refresher. That guy, the one dancing like a fool for the whole world to see? Yeah, he fully earned his public shaming—and here’s why:
In 2011, Mark Bao found his MacBook Air stolen. It’s bad, but what can you do? Well, if you’re savvy, you might just access your stolen device through Backblaze and retrieve the thief’s personal files. And if you happen to find a cringeworthy video of the thief dancing like an idiot, you might as well share it on YouTube for some well-deserved worldwide embarrassment. Guess what Bao decided to do?
The thief’s humiliation was so complete that he ended up returning the laptop and begging Bao to take the video down. But Bao, clearly not one for forgiveness, posted the apology message too, alongside a mocking commentary—showing the world that you should never mess with a tech-savvy person.
3. Singing Revolution

What happened: The Singing Revolution
We’ve seen some remarkable moments, but let’s be honest—these are mostly isolated incidents. After all, has anyone ever managed to rise up against an entire government and win? I mean, against a massive, oppressive regime like, say, the Soviet Union? Well, keep reading.
For much of the 20th century, Estonia was firmly under Russia’s control. And as we know, Communist regimes tend to be less than ideal, with one of the key ways Russia kept the Estonians in check being by outlawing their culture. Everything, from flags to chants, was banned by the Moscow-led government. Even their beloved folk songs were forbidden. Unfortunately for Russia, Estonians had an unbreakable love for their folk music.
In 1988, 300,000 Estonians gathered to sing the very songs their tormentors had banned. The following year, a human chain 360 miles long, stretching from Estonia through Latvia and Lithuania, was formed. And once again, they sang. Despite the recent events at Tiananmen Square, despite the overwhelming military power of the Soviets, the people stood firm—unarmed, simply singing their old songs. The Soviet high command was horrified by the peaceful resistance, but it was already too late. Inspired by this wave of non-violent defiance, Lithuania declared its independence, and eventually, so did Estonia. This was one of the key events that helped bring about the collapse of the USSR just five months later.
Now that's a truly remarkable comeback.
2. Westboro

What happened: A 9-Year-Old Crashes a Westboro Baptist Hate Rally
Many people have stood up against the hate-filled pickets of the Westboro Baptist Church, but none quite like this. This protest, however, has a twist—it comes from a nine-year-old.
Josef Miles was strolling around the Washburn University campus with his mom one day when they happened upon a classic Westboro hate rally. At the age of nine, most kids would probably have asked their parent what a ‘fag’ meant and launched into an awkward conversation, but not Miles. Instead, he quickly made his own ‘God Hates No-one’ sign and initiated a one-person counter-protest. Did it stop the Westboro protesters? Of course not. Did it give the rest of us hope for the future? Absolutely.
1. Marijuana Possession

What happened: Roger Pion Lives Every Man’s Dream
Unlike most of the people on this list, Roger Pion may have actually had it coming. Last year, he was arrested for marijuana possession—a crime that, despite strong arguments for its decriminalization, remains illegal. However, instead of getting bogged down in legal arguments, Pion decided to fight back in the most audacious way possible—fulfilling every adolescent boy’s dream.
After commandeering his father's oversized tractor, Pion drove straight to the local police station and crushed every car in the lot before speeding off into the Vermont sunset. The best part of this cathartic revenge? The police had nothing left to chase him with, which meant Pion not only got to release his frustration but also made the authorities look utterly ridiculous.
