Now that we've fully embraced the New Year, it's time to give our minds a boost with another round of intriguing factoids. These bite-sized science gems are mostly fresh to most of us. Let’s start the year off right with some enlightening knowledge!
1 Factoids 1 – 5

1. Raindrops don’t have the teardrop shape often seen in illustrations. In reality, they are more spherical.
2. Sublimation is when a solid transforms directly into a gas without passing through the liquid phase. This occurs when dry ice is thrown into a fire.
3. Gorillas create their own nests (as shown above) by weaving together soft leaves and bent branches. Males usually prefer sleeping on the ground, while females opt for tree nests.
4. Champagne’s fizz is not due to carbon dioxide, but rather because of dust or dirt. If you had a perfectly smooth glass without any dust particles, champagne would remain still.
5. Digestion primarily takes place in the small intestine, not the stomach. This might explain why someone can be bulimic yet still gain weight.
2 Factoids 6 – 10

6. The red juice you see in rare steak isn’t blood – it’s myoglobin, which is closely related to blood. By the time steak reaches the market, almost all the blood has been removed.
7. Surprisingly, plastic bags are better for the environment than paper ones. Making paper bags uses much more energy than making plastic ones. Plus, recycling paper bags uses more energy than recycling plastic, and they take up more space in landfills. In landfills, which are often airtight underground, both paper and plastic struggle to biodegrade.
8. Polar bears are truly remarkable animals. Their fur is transparent (not white), their skin is black (not white), and under warm, humid conditions, their fur can turn green due to algae growth.
9. Pet allergies are often not caused by fur but by dead skin cells, saliva, or waste. Regular grooming and cleaning of pets can significantly reduce these allergies.
10. The so-called tongue map is a myth – all areas of your tongue can detect every taste. The tongue map comes from a now-discredited German study from 1901.
3 Factoids 11 – 15

11. When you place a shell to your ear and think you hear the ocean, the sound is actually just the rush of your own blood through your veins! Any cup-shaped object can produce the same effect.
12. While you're alive, your brain appears pink, but after death, it turns grey. Though we call it “gray matter” and “white matter,” these terms don’t accurately represent its true color.
13. Mercury is not the only liquid metal that exists. Gallium (Ga), shown above, is solid at room temperature but melts when held in your hand. Cesium (Cs) and Francium (Fr), the second rarest naturally occurring element, are also capable of being liquid at or near room temperature.
14. Dolphins don't consume water in the way humans do. Drinking seawater would make them sick and could be fatal. Instead, they fulfill their hydration needs entirely from the food they eat.
15. Contrary to popular belief, the Soviet Union was the first to land a spacecraft on the moon, not the United States. In 1959, Luna 2 became the first spacecraft to crash-land on the moon. Later, in February 1966, Luna 9 became the first to soft-land and transmit back images. The United States' Surveyor I landed on the moon four months afterward.
