For devoted Oldsmobile enthusiasts, it might have been surprising to learn that the 1958 models, including the Dynamic 88, shared the same foundational structure as the 1957 versions. However, the 1958 lineup showcased a completely revamped appearance from every angle.
Under the guidance of Art Ross, who led the Oldsmobile Studio since 1947, the 1958 models marked a departure from recent design traditions. The earlier elliptical "jet-intake" grille was replaced with a broad horizontal-bar grille and a robust bumper. The iconic "hockey-stick" side trim was swapped for a forward-projecting design and rear horizontal accents, creating a dynamic yet somewhat conflicting visual effect.
The updated roof design featured a single-piece rear window, addressing complaints about the three-piece design of the 1957 models. The only recognizable Oldsmobile feature was the retention of the high-mounted circular taillights. The wheelbase increased by half an inch (to 122.5 inches), and the 1958 models were 2.2 inches wider than their predecessors.
The Dynamic 88 series served as the cornerstone of the 1958 Oldsmobile lineup. (The Dynamic name, along with features like quad headlights and optional air suspension, was introduced this year.) Equipped with a standard 265-horsepower "economy" variant of the Olds 371-cubic-inch V-8, it offered seven models, including a $2,834 Holiday two-door hardtop that garnered 50,7897 orders.
This original Alaskan White-over-Banff Blue Dynamic 88 hardtop coupe, showcased here, belongs to John Strewe from Lake Zurich, Illinois. It includes optional power steering and brakes, a radio, whitewall tires, and a Hydra-Matic automatic transmission, replacing the standard three-speed synchromesh transmission.
