While its name suggested a combination of performance components, the 1966 Oldsmobile Cutlass 4-4-2 was renowned for its cohesive and dynamic performance. Oldsmobile's take on the modern supercar was rapidly earning recognition as the most well-rounded in its class.
For the 1966 model year, the Cutlass series featured updated sheetmetal and a broader track. The 4-4-2 remained an optional package for coupes and convertibles, adding just $185 to the F-85 or $151 to the Cutlass. Distinctive elements included a unique grille, taillamps, and front-fender scoops. Bucket seats came standard on Cutlass models, and the horizontal-sweep speedometer was replaced with sporty round gauges. An optional tachometer was available for an additional $52.

The 4-4-2 remained the sole model equipped with the four-barrel 400-cid V-8 engine. A minor increase in compression raised the horsepower to 350. For an additional $110, customers could opt for Oldsmobile's first factory tri-carburetor setup since the late 1950s, which increased output to 360 bhp and reduced quarter-mile times to the high 14s at 97 mph. Oldsmobile had perfected this system, ensuring a seamless transition between the middle carburetor and the outer two.
Shifting became more precise with the three- and four-speed manual transmissions, thanks to the newly available Hurst linkages from the factory. These featured both '4-4-2' and 'Hurst' engraved on the gear lever.

The heavy-duty suspension, featuring standard sway bars at both the front and rear, made a return. Testers praised the 4-4-2's handling, noting its smoother ride and superior steering and control compared to the Chevelle SS and GTO. Its braking performance was also rated as exceptional.
Oldsmobile also introduced a limited number of tri-power engines equipped with the new W-30 system. This included an air-induction setup with front bumper scoops and internal engine upgrades.
Most 4-4-2 models delivered impressive power without being unruly, combined Oldsmobile's comfort with precise handling, and offered premium features at reasonable prices. Motor Trend praised it, stating, 'It would be difficult to find another car that excels in so many areas.'
