This approach ensured that the top contender in the intermediate muscle category also produced the ultimate full-size performance vehicle -- the 1966 Pontiac 2+2.

Consequently, it was no surprise that the frontrunner in intermediate muscle cars also crafted the most exceptional full-size performance car -- the 1966 Pontiac 2+2.

Introduced in 1964, the Pontiac 2+2 initially served as a specialized package for the Catalina, featuring enhanced engine, suspension, and trim. By 1965, the 421-cid V-8 became standard, and in 1966, the 2+2 was elevated to a standalone model, retaining its foundation on the Catalina two-door hardtop or convertible. With its bold design and imposing dimensions, the 2+2 exuded unmatched charisma and delivered competitive performance against other high-performance vehicles.
The Pontiac 2+2 debuted in 1964 as a performance package for the Catalina, offering upgraded engine, suspension, and trim. In 1965, the 421-cid V-8 was included as standard, and by 1966, the 2+2 became a distinct model, still built on the Catalina two-door hardtop or convertible platform. Its striking design and commanding size made it a standout in terms of presence, while its performance capabilities rivaled those of other high-performance cars.
The standard setup featured a heavy-duty suspension, with options for even firmer springs and shocks. The premium Catalina interior was upgraded with bucket seats and a console, complemented by optional sport steering wheels and advanced instrumentation, including a tachometer and oil-pressure gauge. Distinctive exterior elements included "2+2" emblems, dual-lens taillights, and chrome side gills, while Pontiac's iconic eight-lug aluminum wheels served as the ultimate optional upgrade.

This was the only Pontiac model to come standard with a 421-cid engine. The base engine was a 338-bhp four-barrel, with two optional tri-power 421s offering 356 bhp and 376 bhp, respectively. The latter, known as the 421 HO, featured a high-output camshaft and valve train, along with a declutching fan, specialized exhaust manifolds, and chrome low-restriction air cleaners. Chrome accents also adorned the rocker covers and oil-filler cap.
Transistorized ignition was an available feature. The standard transmission was a three-speed manual, with optional upgrades to a four-speed or automatic at an additional cost. Manual versions were equipped with Hurst shifters. Optional extras included a limited-slip differential and gear ratios as high as 4:11.1.

Harnessing immense power and a balanced 55/45 weight distribution, the 2+2 could accelerate with minimal tire spin and navigate corners with remarkable precision. It offered a quiet, smooth ride, surpassing the harshness often associated with intermediate muscle cars. After reverting to an optional package in 1967, the 2+2 was discontinued, leaving behind a legacy as a proud symbol of an era when large cars, especially Pontiacs, dominated the roads.
