The 1967 Chevrolet Chevelle SS 396 made significant progress in some areas, while taking a few steps back in others.
This muscle car received key upgrades in terms of handling and driveability. The standard rayon two-ply 7.75x14 tires were swapped for F70X14s with nylon belts, lowering the profile and enhancing grip and steering response. The car’s stability improved during quick directional changes. The introduction of front disc brakes, a $79 option, significantly boosted stopping power, while new 14-inch slotted wheels added to the car's purposeful look.

The standard transmission for the 1967 Chevelle SS 396 remained a three-speed manual, with the four-speed option available for an additional $105. The two-speed Powerglide automatic was offered again, costing $116, but for the first time, the three-speed Turbo Hydra-matic was available for $231. This transmission offered significant performance improvements over the Powerglide, especially with its quicker downshift for better passing ability.
Federal safety regulations introduced an energy-absorbing steering column and padded surfaces on the dashboard, though the interior still lacked the excitement of competitors like the GTO. One upgrade was the repositioning of the optional tachometer, moving it from under the driver's right knee to a more accessible location left of the steering wheel. Exterior modifications were minor, including a redesigned bumper, grille, and a blackout tail panel, though the hood louvers remained purely cosmetic.

The standard engine for the 1967 Chevelle SS 396 was a 325-horsepower 396-cubic-inch V8. For $105, the L34 upgrade offered a 350-horsepower version, though it lost 10 horsepower due to GM’s new weight-to-horsepower rule that limited any car, except the Corvette, to no more than 1 horsepower per 10 pounds of curb weight. A 375-horsepower L78 was available as a $476 dealer-installed option, though it was not included in the official sales brochures and was fitted into only 612 cars.

Overall, Chevrolet made significant improvements to the SS 396. With starting prices of $2,825 for the coupe and $3,033 for the convertible—just around $285 more than similar Malibu models—it remained an affordable option.
