
While Ford struggled to gain street credibility in the mid-'60s, Mercury faced even greater obscurity. That changed with the arrival of the 1967 Mercury Comet 427, a true under-the-radar muscle car that demanded attention.

By 1966, the Comet had evolved from its compact Ford Falcon roots to the larger Fairlane platform. Cyclone models featured Ford's robust 335-horsepower 390-cid V-8, but their added weight compared to the Fairlane GT made them less agile.

While a limited number of '66 Fairlanes were equipped with the formidable 427 engine, it wasn't until 1967 that this powerhouse became a standard production option, extending to the Comet lineup. Mercury offered the 427 in all two-door Comet models, including the Cyclone, Caliente, Capri hardtops, and the base Comet 202 pillared coupe. The latter was particularly intriguing, being shorter, lighter, and more understated with its Falcon-inspired roofline. Imagine it in plain paint, bench seats, simple hubcaps, and only a subtle "427" badge—a true sleeper.
In the 1967 Fairlane (dubbed the "Cobra 427") and Comet, the 427-cid V-8 came in two versions. The "Cyclone 427" featured a 780-cfm Holley four-barrel carburetor and 410 horsepower, while the "Super Cyclone 427" boasted dual 652-cfm Holley quads and 425 horsepower. Both variants had 11.1:1 compression, solid lifters, and were paired exclusively with a four-speed transmission.

Only about 200 Fairlanes and even fewer Comets were ordered with the 427 engine in 1967. Equipped with the Super Cyclone powertrain and optional upgrades like a tachometer ($47), wide-oval whitewall tires ($83), and power front disc brakes ($84), a Comet 202 would have cost approximately $3,200. This combination of a high-performance engine, lightweight body, and no-nonsense design epitomized the purest form of a muscle car.
