
While Plymouth had produced many fast cars before 1967, none captured the cohesive performance identity pioneered by the Pontiac GTO. In 1967, Plymouth responded with a top-tier muscle car, the Belvedere GTX, drawing some influence from the GTO for its name.

Built on the stylish two-door Belvedere hardtop and convertible models, the GTX featured a distinctive grille, a special tail panel, simulated hood scoops, and a chrome gas cap. Twin racing stripes were available as an option. Inside, the cabin was luxurious, complete with bucket seats, embossed vinyl, and abundant chrome accents.

The GTX was designed for effortless speed, equipped with a powertrain that delivered massive power with ease: Mopar's newly strengthened 375-bhp 440-cid V-8, known as the Super Commando 440. This engine, based on Chrysler's big-car engine, was enhanced for high-rpm performance with a modified camshaft, updated valve train, and improved intake and exhaust systems.

The GTX came with Mopar's renowned three-speed TorqueFlite automatic transmission. A four-speed manual was also available, and it included premium features such as a larger ring gear, a double-breaker distributor, a free-wheeling fan, and even an oil-pan windage tray.
The GTX's six-leaf rear springs, heavy-duty shocks, torsion bars, and ball joints were widely praised for their handling capabilities. However, the optional power steering was criticized for being excessively over-assisted. Disc brakes were available as an option but didn't appear to offer much of an advantage over the standard heavy-duty drum brakes.

Around 720 buyers opted to pay an additional $546 for the GTX's only engine choice, the 425-bhp 426 Street Hemi. It shared the standard GTX running gear and was capable of completing the quarter-mile in the low 13-second range. However, the 440/TorqueFlite combination was equally competitive in most street encounters. Plymouth had finally created its signature car, unapologetically inspired by its predecessors. As Car and Driver advised, 'GTO owners had better look to their defenses.'
