Although Pontiac entered the pony-car competition later than others, it rapidly caught up. Thoughtful modifications positioned the 1968 Pontiac Firebird 400 as arguably the top compact muscle car of its time.

The exterior design remained largely the same, with the exception of removing side vent windows and adding fender marker lights required by federal regulations. Underneath, Pontiac engineers continued to enhance the Camaro-based suspension imposed by GM. Performance models of both brands received upgraded multi-leaf rear springs and staggered shock absorbers positioned fore and aft of the axle, reducing axle tramp during aggressive acceleration.
Pontiac further improved driving dynamics by introducing new features like adjustable Koni shock absorbers ($42). Front disc brakes stayed an optional $63 upgrade, but some 400 models were reportedly fitted with new variable-assist power steering, offering a quicker response and better stability at higher speeds.
The standard 400-cid V-8 saw a five-horsepower boost, reaching 330 hp. The Ram Air package remained the most exclusive and powerful engine option, priced around $600 above the base 400. It featured a more aggressive camshaft, sturdier valve springs, and functional hood scoops. Midway through the year, the 335-hp Ram Air engine was replaced by the 340-hp Ram Air II.

A third variant of the 400 engine debuted in 1968, striking the perfect balance between power and refinement. The 400 HO (High Output) cost approximately $350 more than the base 400 and featured free-flowing exhaust systems and a unique camshaft when paired with a four-speed transmission. Rated at 335 hp, it revved higher than the base engine but lower than the Ram Air. All 400 engines utilized a single four-barrel carburetor and were available with a three- or four-speed manual or an optional three-speed automatic transmission. The four-speed was standard on Ram Air models.

During a 1968 Car and Driver comparison, the Firebird 400 HO outperformed rivals like the 390-cid Javelin, 390 Mustang, 390 Cougar, Camaro SS 396, and 340 Barracuda. The Pontiac not only proved to be the fastest but also boasted the smoothest engine and the most user-friendly handling.
Car and Driver praised the Firebird, stating, "For pure driving pleasure and confidence, the Firebird stood nearly in a league of its own."
