Ford embraced the affordable muscle car trend with the 1969 Ford Fairlane Cobra 428. This midsize vehicle stood out for its performance, a departure from the brand's usual style. It featured a stripped-down Fairlane hardtop or SportsRoof fastback design, with a blacked-out grille and minimal exterior details. The only hints of its power were subtle Cobra emblems and "428" insignias.

The car came standard with a 428-cid Cobra Jet V-8 engine. Priced at $3,200, it included a four-speed manual transmission, with an automatic option for just $37 more. While Ford claimed the Cobra Jet produced 335 bhp, experts estimated its actual output closer to 400 bhp. An optional Ram Air system, priced at $133, featured a functional hood scoop to enhance airflow during heavy acceleration. These CJ-R engines, though rated at 335 bhp, outperformed the standard version, achieving high-13-second quarter-mile times at 102 mph.

Similar to the '68 Mopars that pioneered the budget-performance segment, the Cobra kept things simple. It featured a "competition" suspension with staggered rear shocks, F70x14 tires, and hood-lock pins as standard. Power steering ($100) and power front disc brakes ($65) were optional upgrades. A limited-slip differential was available for $63, with gear ratios including 4.30:1 in a durable Detroit Locker setup, which necessitated an engine oil cooler. The interior was basic with a bench seat; bucket seats and a console added $169, while an 8000-rpm tachometer cost $48 extra.

Much like the standard intermediate model it was built upon, the Cobra offered a smooth and predictable driving experience, with steady handling and unresponsive power steering. However, it stood out from most Fords with its impressive speed.
"The 428 had...a laid-back demeanor: it lacked the high-revving excitement of a Chevy," Patrick Bedard noted in a 1990 Car and Driver retrospective. "But it delivered massive torque and remained reliable—perfect for street racers. It also performed well with an automatic transmission: simply floor it and hold on. This made every CJ a formidable contender, no matter the driver's skill level."
