While judges typically command respect, the 1960s saw a growing irreverence toward authority figures. The phrase "Here comes da judge!" evolved from a mocking line on TV's Laugh-In to a widely recognized part of American slang.

By naming its latest GTO model "The Judge," Pontiac conveyed a sense of authority while maintaining a lighthearted attitude, much like the Road Runner. The car's robust V-8 engines emphasized its power, while vibrant op-art designs and bold colors highlighted its playful side.
Initially, The Judge was envisioned as an economical muscle car, possibly a single-color pillared coupe with basic features like rubber floor mats and top-tier performance parts. However, the version released in December 1968 was a $332 upgrade for the GTO hardtop or convertible, bundling numerous premium features that would cost significantly more if purchased separately.

The standard engine was the 366-bhp Ram Air III, a variant of the GTO's 400-cid V-8, featuring a knob under the dashboard to close the hood scoops during wet weather. To reduce costs, Pontiac equipped it with a three-speed manual transmission and a Hurst T-handle shifter, while omitting trim rings from the Rally II wheels. However, all Judges retained the firm GTO suspension and wide-tread Polyglas G70x14 tires.

For an additional $390, buyers could upgrade to the Ram Air IV, featuring an aggressive cam and an underrated 370 bhp. While this version of the 400 was rough at idle and sluggish below 3000 rpm, making it challenging for street driving and drag strip launches, it became a formidable tool in the hands of an experienced driver. Options like a close-ratio four-speed ($195), automatic transmission ($227), Positraction ($63), front disc brakes ($64), power steering ($100), and a hood-mounted tachometer ($63) completed the well-equipped Judge.

This Judge wasn't dressed in solemn black robes. Instead, it boasted a rear-deck spoiler, blackout grille, and Judge decals
that adorned the exterior, though the interior remained standard GTO except for Judge badges. To dispel any notion of being a budget muscle car, every standard GTO option was available, including hidden headlamps. The Judge performed identically to similarly equipped GTOs but with a more irreverent flair.
