In 1970, General Motors abandoned its 400-cubic-inch displacement restriction for intermediate models, paving the way for some of Detroit's fastest vehicles. The 1970 Buick GSX stood out as a prime example, contributing to what many consider the golden year of American muscle cars.

Buick led the charge in the performance revolution, basing its high-powered model on the redesigned Skylark. The 1970 version featured a two-inch longer body while retaining the same wheelbase. The GS 400, with its 400-cid V-8, was replaced by the GS 455, powered by a robust 455-cid V-8 engine.

The new engine not only benefited from increased displacement but also featured larger valves, improved cylinder heads, and a more aggressive camshaft. Rated at 350 bhp, its staggering 510 lb-ft of torque (achieved at a low 2800 rpm) was surpassed only by Cadillac's 474- and 500-cid V-8s in production vehicles.
GS models came standard with functional hood scoops connected to dual air-cleaner intakes. For those craving even more power, Buick introduced the 455 Stage I performance package. This upgrade included a more aggressive cam, larger valves with reinforced springs, ported cylinder heads, and adjusted carburetor jetting. While torque remained the same, Buick modestly claimed 360 horsepower, though most testers estimated it exceeded 400. Priced at just $199, the Stage I package also featured a Positraction 3.64:1 axle and performance enhancements for the available three- and four-speed manuals and the automatic transmission.

Midway through the model year, Buick introduced the GSX, the pinnacle of its supercar lineup. Priced at an additional $1,196 over the GS 455, it was available in Apollo White or Saturn Yellow, complemented by distinctive stripes and spoilers. The package featured a hood-mounted tachometer, a Hurst-shifted four-speed transmission, Polyglas G60xl5 tires on seven-inch-wide wheels, front disc brakes, and a heavy-duty suspension.

Out of the 687 GSXs produced, 488 were equipped with the Stage 1 upgrade, priced at $113 for the GSX. Motor Trend hailed the GS 455 Stage 1 as "the quickest American production car we had ever tested" after it completed a quarter-mile in 13.38 seconds at 105.5 mph. Most other publications recorded times in the high 13-second range. Regardless, Buick solidified its status as a legendary contender in the muscle car hall of fame.
