While other models had their merits, the 1970 Chevrolet Camaro Z28 stood out as the most well-rounded Z28 ever produced. It represented the pinnacle of muscle car evolution.
This year, the Camaro retained its 108-inch wheelbase but introduced a completely redesigned coupe body that became an instant classic. The Z28 returned as a $573 package, featuring a new engine as its centerpiece. With Trans Am racing rules permitting destroking to achieve 305 cid, the Z28 adopted the Corvette's 350-cid LT1 V-8 as its exclusive power source. This legendary small-block engine boasted solid lifters, a high-performance cam, large valves, aluminum pistons, 11.0:1 compression, and a 780-cfm Holley four-barrel carburetor, delivering 370 bhp in the Corvette and 360 bhp in the Z28.

The Z28 required a $206 Hurst-shifted Muncie four-speed and $44 Positraction 3.73:1 gears (with an optional 4.10:1 ratio) as mandatory additions. With improved low-end torque, Chevrolet introduced the Z28's first-ever automatic-transmission option. Enhanced suspension systems made all 1970 Camaros excellent handlers, and the Z28, equipped with sturdier components and grippy Polyglas F60xl5 tires, stood out as a top-tier road car.
The package included hood and decklid striping, a black grille, and seven-inch-wide mag-style steel wheels with polished lugs. A rear spoiler came standard, but the air-induction hood was discontinued. The Z28 could still be paired with the Rally Sport package, priced at $169, which featured a distinctive front-end design with a soft Endura grille surround and chrome bumperettes. The instrument layout was refined, though the tachometer was part of the optional $84 gauge cluster.

The Z28 had evolved into a more refined machine. While it may have shed some of its earlier raw exuberance, it excelled in acceleration, handling, and overall sophistication. Car and Driver praised the 1970 model as "an automobile of exceptional quality... a vehicle of outstanding performance."
After securing Trans Am championships in 1968 and 1969, the racing Z28s struggled in 1970. Meanwhile, production models began to lose horsepower after this year, marking the start of a prolonged performance decline. The remarkable 1970 Z28 served as a fitting finale to the muscle car era.
