Following the success of the Road Runner in 1968, Plymouth struck gold again in 1970 with the economical Duster 340. The 1970 Plymouth Duster 340 followed a tried-and-true formula: a cost-effective Valiant platform with a sleek fastback design, paired with Mopar's powerful 340-cid four-barrel V-8 engine.
The compact Duster outperformed the 340 'Cuda in terms of weight, space, and speed. Priced at just $2,547, it was the most affordable option in Plymouth's Rapid Transit System and the only model to feature standard front disc brakes.
The 340 V-8 engine had already established its reputation in previous years, powering underdog Darts and earlier Barracudas to mid-14-second quarter-mile times at nearly 100 mph. Equipped with a Carter AVS four-barrel carburetor and a camshaft timing slightly less aggressive than the 440 Six Pack, it was officially rated at 275 bhp, though experts claimed it delivered closer to 325 bhp.

The Duster featured a heavy-duty three-speed manual transmission as standard, with optional four-speed or TorqueFlite transmissions. A 3.23:1 axle ratio came standard, while 5:1 and 3.91:1 gears, along with a Sure-Grip limited-slip differential, were available for an additional cost.

As part of the Rapid Transit System, the Duster 340 was equipped with performance-enhancing features such as heavy-duty suspension components, a front stabilizer bar, and six-leaf rear springs. Standard tires were E70xl4s mounted on 5.5-inch rally wheels. The car shared the instrument panel with earlier Barracuda models, and buyers could opt for bucket seats and a center console with a floor shifter instead of the standard front bench seat.
Optional features included a pistol-grip shifter for the four-speed transmission, an 8000-rpm tachometer, and power steering. While no scoops were available, the car featured dual exhausts and subtle decals as its only performance-inspired styling cues.

The firm and slightly lowered suspension resulted in a jarring ride and didn't stop the car's front end from pushing through sharp turns. The affordable price also meant some cost-cutting in the interior trim. However, the Duster 340 was a quick muscle car, practical, understated, and full of personality. It was undoubtedly a winning formula!
