The boat-tail rear fender design, first introduced on the 1970 Sportster, was carried over to the 1971 Super Glide. Although it wasn't universally loved, it remained available as a $60 upgrade for the 1971 Sportsters.

Optional features included the patriotic red, white, and blue Sparkling America paint job, as well as shades like Sparkling Turquoise, seen on this model. However, none of these options gained enough popularity to be reintroduced in 1972.

In 1971, Sportster engines maintained an 883-cc displacement. By 1972, this was increased to 1,000-cc, a response to the rising competition from high-capacity Japanese motorcycles dominating the large-displacement sport bike market.
