The base Firebird, Esprit, and the 1973 Pontiac Firebird Formula all featured a distinctive new eggcrate grille at the front. However, the Formula model had the potential to conceal something even more extraordinary under its hood. A fortunate few received the new Super-Duty 455 engine instead of the standard 350-cid V-8.

Out of the 1295 SD-455 engines produced in 1973-74, the majority were installed in Trans Ams, but 100 were allocated to Formulas, with 43 of those being 1973 models. Initially boasting 310 net horsepower at 4000 rpm, most SD-455 engines were equipped with a milder camshaft, resulting in a measured output of 290 horsepower.
The SD-455 engine featured several enhancements, including a reinforced block, four-bolt main bearings designed for dry-sump lubrication, forged connecting rods, and TRW pistons. This powerhouse could achieve 0-60 mph in less than 5.5 seconds—remarkable for a period marked by declining performance—and complete the quarter-mile in just 13.8 seconds, even with an automatic transmission.
The standard 455-cid V-8, now detuned to 250 horsepower, was once again the default option for Trans Ams. These models could be paired with either a four-speed manual or a Turbo Hydra-Matic transmission and Safe-T-Track. Notably, the hood scoops on Trans Ams were now sealed and nonfunctional.

Both the Formula and Trans Am models offered the option of radial-ply tires. Despite a slight dip in performance, the Trans Ams still managed to turn heads with their striking new hood decal.
Firebird sales surged dramatically, contributing to Pontiac's record-breaking overall sales. However, the OPEC oil embargo soon followed, posing a serious threat to the future of high-performance vehicles. Thankfully for Firebird enthusiasts, Pontiac chose to ignore the growing demands for restraint.
