Nippon Gakki, initially a producer of musical instruments, ventured into motorcycle manufacturing with a small model following World War II.
The model was derived from the German DKW 125-cc two-stroke single, which also inspired the post-war BSA Bantam and Harley-Davidson S-125 motorcycles. Like its counterparts, it thrived during the post-war sales surge. It was named "Yamaha" in tribute to Nippon's founder.
During the 1950s, Yamaha achieved notable success in racing. The acquisition of Showa later in the decade further enhanced its engineering expertise, particularly in rotary valve technology.
Yamaha expanded its lineup with larger twin-cylinder models, reaching up to 305 cc, all powered by two-stroke engines. The largest of these eventually led to the development of the 1974 Yamaha RD350 motorcycle.
By that time, Yamaha had also ventured into four-stroke twins, exemplified by the 650-cc XS1. While this model saw numerous iterations over the years, the company remained committed to two-stroke technology for the time being.
The 1974 Yamaha RD350 marked a significant achievement in motorcycle design, boasting an impressive power-to-weight ratio and a broader power band, thanks to reed-valve induction. This made it not only fast but also highly manageable in urban traffic.
Following the initial models, smaller versions with engines as compact as 125 cc were introduced, and by 1976, the 350 cc engine was upgraded to 400 cc.
However, the era of two-stroke street bikes was short-lived, as stringent U.S. emission regulations began to phase them out, leading to the discontinuation of the RD series by 1980.
