It appeared as if Honda deliberately aimed to design the most unconventional bike imaginable.

Starting with the powertrain: Although V-twins were common and Moto Guzzi had long positioned them transversely in the frame with shaft drive, the 1980 Honda CX500 stood out as distinctly unique.
The 500-cc engine was not only water-cooled but also featured four valves per cylinder, utilizing pushrods instead of the more common overhead camshafts.
Additionally, the design of the 1980 Honda CX500 motorcycle was debatable. Its upright forks and compact engine resulted in a short wheelbase, paired with a relatively tall frame.
The CX500 was among the first models to sport Honda's innovative Comstar "mag" wheels, with a 19-inch front and a 16-inch rear, a design that initially required some getting used to.
However, these features were overshadowed by the bike's unique bodywork. The fuel tank narrowed at the front, while a large half-moon taillight extended from a small fairing behind the strikingly stepped seat.
Ultimately, the bike presented an unusual blend of standard, sporty, and cruiser elements.
Surprisingly, the 1980 Honda CX500 motorcycle achieved considerable success. It was known for its reliability and fuel efficiency, and despite being priced higher than typical 500cc models, it stood out as one of the most affordable shaft-drive motorcycles available.
The somewhat unconventional design of the early models found favor with police units and daily commuters, while the later Custom versions offered a more appealing aesthetic. Additionally, the touring-focused Silver Wing, akin to a smaller Gold Wing, served as an excellent lightweight option for long-distance rides.
Although performance was never the primary focus of the Honda CX500, that aspect was soon to evolve.
