Upon its debut, the 1985 Yamaha V-Max motorcycle instantly claimed the title of the King of Quick. Blurring the lines between sportbike and cruiser, it stood out as a street-legal dragster.

The 1985 Yamaha V-Max derived its immense power from a 1200-cc V-four engine, featuring four valves per cylinder.
The engine was derived from the powerplant of the company's Venture touring bike, but it underwent several enhancements. One notable upgrade was a variable intake system that activated additional butterflies as rpm rose, delivering strong low-end torque and a peak output of 145 horsepower.
Surprisingly, the final drive utilized a shaft, which likely consumed more power compared to a chain. However, the 1985 Yamaha V-Max motorcycle performed flawlessly regardless.
The V-Max was undeniably fast, but subtlety was not its forte. The slim fuel tank appearance was merely a cover for electronics, as the actual tank was positioned under the seat. Large aluminum scoops beneath the tank appeared to be ram-air ducts but cleverly concealed the horns.
A single speedometer was mounted on the handlebars, while the tachometer, water temperature gauge, and warning lights were integrated into an instrument panel on the "tank."
The stepped seat design ensured the rider stayed in place during acceleration, and the duck-tail rear fender added a sporty, aggressive aesthetic.
After being discontinued for a few years, the V-Max returned in the late 1980s. Its straight-line performance remained unmatched by any motorcycle for a considerable time.
