True to Harley-Davidson's legacy, the 1988 FXSTS Softail Springer blended both classic and contemporary design elements, making it a distinctive model in the lineup.
The new Springer front end echoed the design used before the introduction of Hydra-Glide hydraulic forks in 1949. It featured a leading-link configuration that activated compression and rebound springs, enhanced by a modern hydraulic shock.
At the rear, the Softail suspension mimicked the appearance of a rigid frame but actually pivoted like a swingarm, supported by a set of coil-over shocks concealed beneath the chassis.
In the early 1980s, Harley revisited an idea from its history: belt drive. First introduced on the Sturgis model, belts were used for both the primary drive (connecting the engine to the transmission) and the secondary drive (from the transmission to the rear wheel).
These weren't the leather belts of earlier days, but modern toothed rubber belts with reinforcing fibers. They were lighter, quieter than chains, and required no lubrication.
When compared to shaft drive, they were more affordable and didn’t cause "pogoing" effects during throttle changes. As a result, belt drive became a popular feature on many Harleys, including this model.
The Softail Springer was powered by the 80-cubic-inch overhead-valve 'Evo' Big Twin engine, which had replaced the 'Shovelhead' of the same displacement a few years earlier.
During Harley-Davidson's 85th Anniversary, the Softail Springer was one of three models chosen to sport special paint and badges celebrating the milestone. This distinctive model became a mainstay in the Harley-Davidson lineup.
