Initially, the 1997 Harley-Davidson FXSTS Heritage Springer was offered exclusively in white with red or blue accents. By 1998, black became the standard, alongside special maroon-and-gold editions celebrating Harley's 95th Anniversary. Over time, additional color options were introduced.
True to its nickname, this model was crafted to emulate the appearance of Harley-Davidsons from decades ago. While retro styling wasn't new for the brand, this particular design harkened back to the 1940s, setting it apart from other models.
The front fender and its accompanying light were inspired by pre-World War II designs. Springer forks, reminiscent of the 1940s, were reintroduced by Harley-Davidson in the late 1980s but had previously been reserved for custom builds.
The tank badges replicated those used between 1940 and 1946, while the fringed saddlebags and 'tombstone' taillight were also characteristic of that era.
Beyond its vintage aesthetics, the Old Boy featured contemporary engineering shared with other Harley Big Twins, such as front and rear disc brakes, an 80-cubic-inch Evolution V-twin engine, and a belt drive system.

In terms of mechanics, the FXSTS was equipped with modern features comparable to other Big Twin models of the 1990s, including its powerful 80-cubic-inch Evolution V-twin engine.
By 1997, springer forks had made a stylish comeback.
