To create a space that feels contemporary and inviting, heed the advice of seven interior design experts who highlight key mistakes to avoid. This way, you can craft a restful retreat that’s both comfortable and up-to-date.
Matching Bedroom Sets
Do you recall the days when buying a headboard, dresser, and nightstands from the same store was the norm? "Matching bedroom sets have been a long-standing trend," notes Jennifer McKissick, founder of Jennifer McKissick Interiors. "Big box stores make it incredibly easy for you!"
However, the designer emphasizes that achieving a curated look is far more desirable. "Most bedrooms I design feature a mix of new, vintage, and antique pieces," she explains, noting that this approach is also more eco-friendly.
If you’re determined to buy multiple furniture pieces from the same brand, that’s fine, but aim for some diversity, advises Leigh Herr, an interior designer at Mackenzie Collier Interiors. "Switch up the collections you choose from," she suggests. "A minimalist bed frame can look stunning with nightstands in a contrasting design."
Wallpapered or Painted Accent Walls
When wallpapering your bedroom, designers recommend covering all four walls instead of just one. "What once added a touch of flair now feels outdated," says Molly Machmer-Wessels, founder of Woodland Design Studio. "We adore fully papered rooms, so go all in!"
Cami Weinstein, founder of Cami Weinstein Designs, shares the same sentiment. "Embrace wallpapering the entire room to create a warm and immersive atmosphere," she advises. For those seeking a touch of contrast, she recommends painting the ceiling in a shade that harmonizes with the wallpaper.
Even if you skip wallpaper, accent walls still require careful consideration. Rashida Banks also discourages painted accent walls. "Select a paint color you adore enough to use on all walls, or introduce an accent color through bedding, curtains, or decor," the interior designer suggests. "The only exception is an accent color on the ceiling!"
Heavy or Overstyled Bedding
Weinstein points out that bulky comforters and bed skirts are no longer in vogue. Instead, she suggests layering crisp linens, one or two blankets, and a throw at the foot of the bed for a modern look.
The secret to a well-dressed bed lies in simplicity. "The era of piling numerous pillows on the bed that need constant rearranging is over," says Anna Baraness, founder of Studio AK Interiors.
Banks strongly advises against the bed-in-a-bag look. "They often appear cheap," she remarks. "For a polished yet affordable alternative, start with a quilt and matching shams, then gradually add accent pillows to complete the ensemble."
Low Beds
Cece Bowman, founder of Cece Bowman Interiors, recommends steering clear of low headboards and low four-poster beds. "Beds are the focal point of the bedroom and should command attention," she explains. "A four-poster bed should nearly touch the ceiling or crown molding, while upholstered headboards should rise above the eye's midline for maximum impact."
