As summer kicks into high gear, many of us are preparing for our much-anticipated vacations. Whether you're planning an international trip, a scenic road journey, or a relaxing few days at the beach, the excitement is palpable. However, it’s important to remember that your time away can also leave your home more vulnerable to theft.

Automate Your Lighting With Smart Technology
Jim Nye, Vivint's Chief Product Officer, suggests setting up smart lighting in your home. "If a house stays completely dark overnight, it could give the impression that it's empty, potentially attracting burglars. Having automated lighting both indoors and outdoors can effectively prevent break-ins."
Vivint provides a smart lighting solution that lets you easily customize schedules through a user-friendly app. But, if you're on a tight budget or renting, there are numerous smart bulbs available that work seamlessly with systems you might already own, like Alexa or Google Home.
You don't have to outfit every room with smart bulbs. Focus on areas with windows that face the street to start with.
Ensure All Doors and Windows Are Equipped with Sensors
Before embarking on a long trip, ensure all windows and doors are securely closed and locked. Take a final check before leaving. Nye advises that it’s easy to overlook spots like the basement window or a seldom-used back door. "By setting up smart sensors throughout your house in advance, you’ll be able to see any open doors or windows through a central app and lock them as needed before leaving."
Replace Spare Keys with Smart Locks
Experienced burglars know where to look, and that often includes the spare key hidden under a rock or planter. Smart locks provide a much safer alternative. "Smart locks allow remote control and can be programmed to give trusted friends an access code, so they can monitor your home while you're away. Plus, you’ll receive updates on their actions," says Nye.
If installing a smart lock isn't feasible before you leave, consider giving a key to anyone who needs access in person rather than leaving yourself vulnerable to potential risks.
Plan Ahead for Package Deliveries
Did your sunscreen order not arrive on time? Or perhaps that monthly subscription box is arriving the day after you leave? Nye recommends preparing for package deliveries and using a doorbell camera (often part of wireless doorbell systems). "Packages left unattended on your doorstep are a clear sign no one is home—and they provide a perfect opportunity for porch pirates."
He suggests safeguarding your home by scheduling deliveries for before or after your trip. "If you have packages arriving while you're away, a doorbell camera can help deter porch pirates and send you notifications when the deliveries happen."
You could also ask a neighbor to bring your packages inside while you're gone, and return the favor when they’re away on vacation as well.
Finally, consider asking your local post office, or delivery services like FedEx and UPS, to hold your packages or reschedule the delivery dates. If you're using Amazon's subscribe and save, remember to adjust the dates or pause the subscriptions if necessary.
