Fortunately, strategic flooring choices can make even the tiniest kitchen appear more spacious. By blending practicality with aesthetics, the right flooring can create a sense of openness. Experts emphasize the importance of color, pattern, and material when selecting flooring for a small kitchen.
Flooring Selections That Enhance the Perception of Space in Kitchens
Selecting the ideal kitchen flooring involves considering various factors, such as layout and budget. However, if your aim is to create a sense of openness, certain guidelines are essential. Pay close attention to color, pattern, and material to ensure the flooring complements your space perfectly.
Light colors
To make a small kitchen appear more expansive, opt for light-colored flooring that enhances both natural and artificial light. Whether you prefer tiles or engineered wood, lighter shades like bleached wood, off-white, sandy beige, or muted gray can work wonders.
"Light-colored flooring, such as pale oak, whitewashed wood, or light ceramic tiles, is ideal for compact kitchens," advises Mike Belk, owner and founder of BELK Tile. "These choices amplify brightness, giving the room a more open feel. Additionally, matte or satin finishes are preferable, as glossy surfaces can make the space feel cluttered."
Scale
"To make your kitchen appear larger, consider using large-format tiles or wide planks," suggests Belk. "These options reduce visual interruptions, giving the room a more open and airy feel. Neutral shades, such as light gray or beige, further enhance this effect." This type of flooring offers a cohesive and streamlined appearance, making the area seem like one uninterrupted surface.
Continuity
Extending the same flooring from the main living area or adjacent rooms into the kitchen can also make the space feel more expansive. "Whenever feasible, carry the primary flooring from the rest of the home into the kitchen. This seamless transition helps the kitchen feel more integrated and spacious," explains Mark Tremblay of Marc-Michaels Interior Design. "Using a different material can disrupt the visual continuity, making the kitchen appear smaller."
If matching the flooring exactly isn't an option, aim to align the tone or texture of the kitchen flooring with that of neighboring rooms. Another approach is to create a harmonious look by coordinating the kitchen flooring with walls or cabinets in similar hues.
Minimal patterns
While intricate, busy patterns on flooring are generally unsuitable for small kitchens, subtle designs can work well. For instance, herringbone wood floors in low-contrast hues can introduce a sense of rhythm and flow that aligns with the natural movement in the kitchen.
Flooring Mistakes That Make a Kitchen Feel Smaller
In contrast to the recommendations above, dark or heavily patterned floors can make a compact kitchen feel even more confined. While these styles might create a cozy, intimate atmosphere, they can exacerbate the feeling of tightness in an already small space.
"Overly detailed or small, busy patterns on flooring can easily overwhelm a small kitchen, making it appear cluttered and disjointed," explains Isfira Jensen, CEO and principal interior designer at Jensen & Co. Interiors. "Instead of fostering a sense of unity, these patterns fragment the floor, visually shrinking the space further."
High-gloss finishes can also produce a glare that emphasizes flaws and detracts from the room's more expansive features, such as windows, doors, and vibrant appliances. If you choose a glossy finish, opt for softer tones to mitigate the effect.
