They can damage your food supply and disrupt your daily life, causing havoc. While ants are quick to multiply, there are measures you can take to eliminate them permanently. Experts in pest control share their top advice on how to eradicate and prevent ants from entering your home, preserving your space and peace of mind.
Natural Solutions
Consider these natural solutions as your first line of defense against ants. These methods avoid harmful chemicals, which helps protect plants and animals.
Diatomaceous Earth
According to Richard Christner, co-owner of Whitmore Pest and Wildlife Control, Inc., "A natural approach can be effective if applied consistently." One such method involves creating a barrier with diatomaceous earth, which dehydrates ants when they come into contact with it. To prevent ants from entering your home, apply diatomaceous earth in areas they might use to enter, like windowsills, doorways, or along baseboards.
Vinegar and Water
"Another option is using a mixture of vinegar and water to wipe down surfaces, disrupting the ants' scent trails," says Christner. To create a vinegar-based ant repellent, mix equal parts vinegar and water and apply it to floors, counters, and any spots where ants are visible. If you encounter ants, you can directly spray them with the solution and dispose of them.
Lemon Juice
Lemon juice serves as another natural repellent for ants, as it disrupts their scent trails. To create a safe, non-toxic spray, combine three parts water with one part lemon juice. Apply this mixture to areas where ants tend to gather, like kitchen counters, sinks, baseboards, and entry points.
Essential Oils
"If ants invade your home, an essential oil spray, such as thyme oil, can effectively eliminate them," explains Bob Gilbert, a board-certified entomologist at Blue Sky Pest Control. Essential oils like peppermint, thyme, citrus, lavender, and tea tree oil can also deter ants from nesting in your home. Add 15 or more drops of your chosen essential oil to a spray bottle with distilled water. Shake well and apply the mixture to areas where ants are likely to enter.
Chemical Treatments
If natural remedies aren’t successfully removing ants from your home, chemical treatments might be a more powerful option. "Bait placements are especially effective, as they enable ants to bring the insecticide back to the colony, ensuring more widespread control," says Christner. This approach targets entire colonies.
Liquid solutions can also be effective when paired with baits. "Liquids can be used to soak ant colonies, speeding up their elimination, and work well alongside baits," Gilbert explains. "Baits should be placed outside the colony or inside where ants are most visible. Be sure to use these products according to the label instructions and keep them out of reach of children and pets."
Before using any chemical ant products, make sure to read and follow all safety instructions. These formulas can be toxic to humans and pets if ingested, so always keep them away from children and animals.
Professional Pest Control
If you've exhausted DIY methods and ants are still a problem, it may be time to call in a professional. A licensed exterminator can identify the root cause of your ant infestation and eliminate them from your home for good.
"Large infestations or recurring issues may point to a deeper problem that needs professional help," says Christner. "A specialist can pinpoint the cause and provide safe, effective, and long-term solutions."
When choosing a pest control professional, consider factors like their reputation, experience, and qualifications. Check online reviews, ask for recommendations from friends, and conduct background research to ensure you select the right expert to resolve your ant infestation.
How to Prevent Ants from Coming Back
Christner advises that the key to keeping ants away is "proactive maintenance." Here are some steps you can follow to keep your home free from ants.
Seal Doors and Windows
Christner advises sealing any cracks or gaps around windows, doors, and foundations to block entry points. Materials like caulk, weatherstripping, tape, and mesh screens can all help close off these openings.
Keep Food Out of Sight
Eliminating potential food sources is a key step in getting rid of ants. Keep your counters, tables, and floors free of food debris, and be sure to wipe or sweep up crumbs after eating. "Store food in airtight containers and clean up spills immediately to prevent attracting ants," Christner recommends.
Check Water Sources
Ants can also invade your home in search of water. Ensure that your sinks and showers are not leaking, as even small amounts of water can attract ants. Once they find food or water, ants will lead others to the source, which can quickly turn into a larger infestation.
“Eliminating dripping showers and sinks can eliminate thirsty ants from entering your home during those hot summers,” says Gilbert. He adds that doing dishes frequently, wiping food and grease residues off counters and appliances along with frequent vacuuming can also reduce access to food.
"Think like an ant. A scout enters your home looking for resources for the colony," he says. "If it finds food or water, then it will recruit others to take advantage of it. Keeping the home clean will minimize these invasions.”
Regular Inspections
Christner also suggests regularly inspecting and trimming vegetation near your home to prevent ants from gaining easy access.
"Also, scheduling routine maintenance services with a pest control professional can proactively address potential issues before they become significant problems," he adds. "These periodic services help catch any potential problems early, ensuring your home remains ant-free year-round.”
