Photo: Design by Mikel WelchIf your home features a fireplace, it’s likely the room's centerpiece. This is certainly the case for the primary bedroom in the 2024 Mytour Home. Designer Mikel Welch was tasked with designing this space, and his first tip for mantel decor focused on the elements surrounding it.
Welch believes that the objects placed on your mantel should tell a story and offer a mix of materials and textures. In his design, he combined antique candle holders, ceramic vases, and wooden sculptures, all contributing to the English countryside vibe of the room. "Layering these pieces in different heights and textures gives the space depth and visual appeal," he explains. "Natural elements like dried flowers or branches only add to the rustic charm."
If you're looking for inspiration, we've compiled some of our favorite ideas to transform your ordinary fireplace, whether wood-burning or electric, into a stunning focal point. And the best part? These ideas are perfect for any season, so feel free to keep them up all year long.
1. Mirror Moments
Getty/ Andreas von EinsiedelPlacing a mirror above the mantel is a timeless and elegant design choice. "Adding a large vintage mirror not only enhances the overall aesthetic but also helps create the illusion of more space while boosting the natural light," says Welch. Select a mirror style and shape that complements the mood of your room—Mikel opted for one with detailed carvings to match the Cotswolds-inspired design of his primary bedroom.
2. Art Layering
Crystal SinclairArt is often the perfect choice for above a mantel, but if you're hesitant about committing to nails in your wall, leaning art pieces can be just as stunning. Designer Crystal Sinclair beautifully layered artworks above the mantel in this home. "Layering artwork adds depth and softens the overall feel of a room," she explains. "One piece should overlap about a third of another." Just be mindful to ensure you’re not covering anything significant. "Placement needs to be strategic," Sinclair advises.
3. Hang a Bold Statement Piece
Hayley Ellen Day for Jason SaftIf you're not a fan of layered styles, a single, bold piece can stand out beautifully above your mantel. Since this piece was meant to be the focal point, he kept the surrounding decor minimal, using only white vases and a small vase of dried flowers.
