Do you feel like your home is losing its charm or starting to feel outdated? It might be time for a change. If you haven't updated your furniture or decor in a while, it's possible your space needs a little refresh. But where do you start? We asked interior designers to highlight the top five items to replace right now.

Word art had its moment, but that time has passed. Contemporary abstract artist Jessie Read recommends swapping out your 'Live, Laugh, Love' sign for elegant coastal-inspired pieces. 'Replace bold art pieces and refresh your walls with coastal artworks featuring calming shades like whites, sea blues, greens, and sandy tones. Ditch the stark white walls with blue undertones for neutral hues like grey or beige to create a more peaceful and inviting atmosphere,' she suggests.
If you're not ready to splurge on new art, why not turn your stunning vacation photos into artwork? You don't need professional prints—just pick photos that hold personal significance to you and have them made into canvas or print pieces.
Not drawn to the coastal aesthetic? If it doesn’t suit your space, Amanda Leigh from House of Rolison recommends textured paintings as a unique alternative to statement art.
Cool Tones
Designers Alex Mutter-Rottmayer and Austin Carrier from Hommeboys Interiors say it's time to move on from the cold neutrals we've been using. 'We’ve all played it safe with cool, greyish tones, but homes are now craving warmth. Swap out grey and greige finishes for richer, warmer neutrals and more vibrant colors,' they advise.
Changing just a few neutral elements in your space—whether it's wall paint, bedding, pillows, or furniture—can completely refresh the atmosphere and give your home an updated look.
Unlacquered Brass
Unlacquered brass, like many gold finishes, has been a popular choice for years. However, if you're aiming for a higher level of sophistication, designers Mutter-Rottmayer and Carrier suggest opting for finishes like verdigris. Verdigris offers a timeless, antique charm that can give your furniture or cabinetry a vintage, historical vibe.
Don’t worry, you don’t need to scour antique stores or hunt through estate sales for this look. (Who has time for that, right?) Many retailers that specialize in hardware, such as Perigold, offer affordable and accessible options to achieve this aesthetic.
Neutral Upholstery
Mutter-Rottmayer and Carrier recommend replacing your neutral linen furniture with richer, moodier fabrics. 'Consider opting for a deep-hued mohair or a printed jacquard for a cozier, more atmospheric space,' they suggest. If your current furniture is in good condition and you have a tight budget, reupholstering might be a viable alternative.
Angled-Leg Furniture
Unless your furniture is authentically mid-century modern, angled-leg tables and chairs can appear outdated and unremarkable. Swap them out for pieces featuring beaded legs instead. Beaded legs bring texture and elegance, making them a perfect way to add a touch of tradition to modern spaces.
