Keeping your hair safe while you sleep can be challenging, particularly for those with fine, curly, or natural hair, which is more prone to disruption. The good news? Choosing the right hairstyles can minimize pulling and frizz, ensuring your hair stays intact as you rest. We consulted top hairstylists to share their tried-and-true methods for overnight hair protection.
Is Overnight Hair Damage Possible?
Sadly, the answer is yes. Hair with fine or brittle textures is particularly vulnerable to hair loss, especially during sleep. While we rest, our hair faces issues like tangling, moisture depletion, and friction from unconscious movements. Sleeping with wet hair can exacerbate the problem, as it’s more prone to breakage, much like it is after a shower. To avoid damage, always ensure your hair is fully dry before going to bed.
5 Effective Strategies to Shield Your Hair Overnight
1. Opt for Braids or Twists

For those with curly or coily hair, braids and twists are highly recommended as overnight styles, says Susie Geda, founder and creative director of Bibo Salon. “These styles help preserve your curl pattern and reduce tangling,” she explains.
Nickie Alton, a hair extension specialist at the Canyon Salon and Extension Bar, recommends loose braids for clients with extensions. “Start by hydrating the hair, brushing it thoroughly, and then securing it in a loose braid before bedtime,” she advises.
2. Wrap Your Hair with a Scarf or Hair Wrap

Geda recommends wrapping your hair with a silk or satin scarf before sleeping. “This keeps your hair in place and minimizes friction,” she says. The versatility of a hair wrap or scarf means it works for any hairstyle—just ensure your hair is securely wrapped.
3. Style Your Hair in a Low Bun or Ponytail

For those with extensions, Nikki Corzine, owner of the Canyon Salon and Extension Bar, recommends styling your hair in a low bun or ponytail to protect the extensions and extend their lifespan. “Adding a bit of hair oil can help maintain hydration,” she notes. Always adhere to your stylist’s recommended care routine before securing your extensions in a low bun or ponytail.
4. Try the Pineapple Technique

The pineapple method has gained widespread popularity, and it’s easy to see why. This technique involves gathering your hair at the top of your head and securing it in a loose top knot, ideal for those with long, thick, or curly hair. “It prevents curls from losing their shape and minimizes tangling,” explains Geda.
5. Choose a Silk Pillowcase for Better Hair Care
