The K-beauty and Asian beauty industries are leading the way in groundbreaking sun protection innovations.

Korean sunscreens often blend cutting-edge skincare ingredients with advanced sun filters, offering “superior broad-spectrum protection,” according to Dr. Lauren Penzi, a board-certified dermatologist at MDCS Dermatology in New York City. These products typically feature higher SPF and PA ratings compared to American versions, though the latter still provide adequate protection when used properly.
Sunscreen patches are the latest K-beauty trend capturing attention, especially on platforms like TikTok.
“Most UV patches act as a physical barrier, providing UPF protection, which is similar but distinct from traditional SPF,” Penzi explained. The materials in these patches are designed to block both UVA and UVB rays from penetrating the skin.
Beyond sun protection, many of these adhesive patches — available in various colors and shapes to cover areas like under the eyes, nose, and hands — are enriched with skincare ingredients such as hyaluronic acid for hydration and antioxidants to combat environmental stressors that contribute to premature aging.
Additionally, most patches promise all-day sun protection without requiring reapplication, making them ideal for those who struggle to reapply sunscreen every two hours.
While these patches meet Asia’s strict cosmetic standards, they have not yet been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Dr. Brendan Camp of MDCS Dermatology in New York City warns that these patches have limitations and should not replace traditional sunscreen entirely.
“Patches only protect small areas, so sunscreen should still be applied to all exposed skin,” he advised.
Penzi recommends applying the patches to clean, dry skin, ensuring they lie flat without air bubbles or wrinkles.
“Monitor the patch throughout the day. If it loosens due to sweat or movement, replace it with a new one,” Penzi added.
Whether you’re golfing or enjoying a beach day, UV patches can provide an extra layer of sun protection.
