Image Source: Getty ImagesThe American Cleaning Institute reports that the average American family washes 50 pounds of laundry each week—though it often feels more like 100 pounds! With all the laundry we do, we're always looking for budget-friendly ways to streamline our laundry routines, especially with tips that minimize chemicals and ingredients that may irritate children's sensitive skin.
For those wishing to freshen up their laundry naturally and skip harsh chemicals, these five chemical-free laundry hacks are for you. Your towels will feel softer, your whites will look brighter, and you can say goodbye to that bleach bottle.
1. Vinegar as a Natural Fabric Freshener

"It may sound unusual, but it really works!" says cleaning expert Melissa Maker from Clean My Space. The acid in distilled white vinegar breaks down residues left by detergents, which can trap odors, dull colors, and make fabrics feel stiff. "I just pour it into the fabric softener compartment up to the line—you can't really go wrong," Maker shares. She opts for white vinegar in place of fabric softener to avoid affecting the absorbency of microfiber towels, though it can also replace detergent in a pinch.
2. Add Essential Oils for Extra Freshness
Maker also recommends using lavender essential oil, which boasts antibacterial, anti-mold, and anti-mildew properties. "Add it with the vinegar or your regular laundry detergent to neutralize the mildew smell and prevent buildup," she advises. For those not fond of lavender, tea tree oil is another antibacterial option. One important note: Make sure to use therapeutic-grade essential oils to ensure maximum benefits and minimize the risk of skin irritation.
3. Let Baking Soda Work Its Magic to Brighten and Deodorize
Baking soda is a natural deodorizer and brightener, and it’s likely already in your kitchen. To boost your laundry detergent’s effectiveness, simply add 1/2 cup of baking soda during the rinse cycle. This helps balance the pH in the wash, lifting stains and neutralizing any lingering odors, just like it does in your fridge.
4. Say Goodbye to Dryer Sheets
Although many of us love the scent that dryer sheets leave on freshly cleaned laundry, they aren’t the best option for keeping clothes fresh in the long run. Dryer sheets work by releasing fragrances and chemicals that coat clothes with softness and scent. However, these chemicals can build up inside your dryer, reducing its efficiency, and the residue on clothes can attract and hold onto dirt and odors.
Instead, consider using dryer balls. Wool balls are a popular choice, but even the classic tennis ball trick works wonders. Simply toss a few tennis balls into the dryer when drying towels and linens. They will fluff up the fabrics and help circulate air inside the dryer, all without chemicals. Plus, they can speed up drying time.
5. Fold Clothes While They're Still Warm
It's not always feasible, but when possible, remove clothes from the dryer while they’re still warm and fold them immediately. Doing this not only checks off one more task from your to-do list, but folding clothes while they’re hot helps to eliminate wrinkles, as they don’t have a chance to settle in.
If you can’t fold everything right away, focus on the items that wrinkle the most. In your laundry basket, this would include jeans, dress shirts, and bed linens. Take them out, give them a quick shake to smooth out any wrinkles, and place them on top of the rest of the load (like t-shirts and socks) so they don’t end up scrunched at the bottom. This way, you’ll have crisp pillowcases and sheets, no ironing required!
