Publications International, Ltd.Lilies are herbaceous flowering plants that sprout from bulbs. They thrive in temperate and sub-tropical climates but can also flourish in home gardens or as indoor potted plants.
Known for their enchanting fragrance, lilies represent purity and come in a dazzling array of colors, including gold, peach, red, green, orange, pink, and even black.
In this section, we’ll guide you through drawing the lily shown above. You can sketch it freehand while referencing your screen or print this page for a detailed view of each step.
In each illustration, trace the red lines to understand precisely what to sketch in that step. Previous steps are highlighted in gray. We provide a visual guide for each step, followed by a detailed explanation of how to execute it.
1. Sketch the Outline

Create a Y-shaped stem with two short, rounded branches at the top. Add long, narrow ovals at the tips of these branches to represent the pods.
About one quarter down from the top of the stem, sketch two additional short branches. Attach a slender, bell-shaped flower to the end of each of these branches.
2. Leaves

Sketch curved leaves along the stem, ensuring that when leaves overlap with flowers, their lines do not intersect the flower shapes.
3. Pods and Petals

Add texture to the pods by drawing two or three long lines for ridges. In the top leaf, sketch a central line. For the lily petals, use rounded triangular shapes as illustrated.
4. Leaves and Stem

Illustrate the flower centers using four small ovals connected to short lines. Enhance the leaves with curved lines and redefine the stem for clarity.
5. Shading

Add subtle shading to the pods and leaves using fine lines that follow their natural curves. Use a few lines to shade the stem and branches, creating a sense of depth and shadow.
Darken the edges of the flowers with long, soft lines. Use shorter lines to shade the petal tips. Create a fuzzy texture in the centers by adding tiny lines to the ovals.
