Publications International, Ltd.With an impressive 400-500 species worldwide, the violet is celebrated for its enchanting fragrances. This vibrant plant typically displays shades of violet but can also bloom in blue, yellow, white, or even a mix of yellow and white.
In this guide, we’ll demonstrate how to sketch the violet shown above. Feel free to draw it freehand while referencing your computer screen or print this page for a detailed view of each step.
Trace the red lines in every illustration to understand what to sketch in each step. Previous steps are highlighted in gray. We’ll provide a visual guide for each stage along with a detailed explanation of the drawing process.
1. Rough Outline

Start by lightly drawing four circles to mark the positions of the flowers. Add two heart-shaped outlines beneath them for the leaves, and use smooth, curved lines to sketch the stems.
Behind the flowers, draw three additional leaf shapes using gentle, curved lines.
2. Sketch Petals and Leaves

Inside the circles, draw the petals using rounded shapes. Use scalloped lines to define the edges of the leaves. For the leaves behind the flowers, indicate that they are folded over.
Achieve this by sketching one side of the shape with a smooth, curved line. Add a second, scalloped line inside the outline to create depth.
3. Stems and Scallops

Outline the petals using gently scalloped lines. Add two short, curved lines within each petal to highlight ridges. Then, carefully draw in the stems.
Incorporate a scalloped line at the base of the stems. Below this line, sketch a small arc to add detail.
4. Veins

Add the veins to the bottom leaves using double-branched lines. For the folded leaves, omit the center vein as it remains hidden.
Sketch narrow V-shaped lines that curve toward the scalloped edges. Add small circles to represent the centers of the flowers.
5. Shading and Detail

Shade the leaves by drawing short parallel lines on both sides of the veins. Use very short lines to shade the edges of the leaves.
Apply a few short lines to shade the tips of each petal. Use minimal, very short lines to shade the centers of the flowers.
