Every year, from September 15 to October 15, the United States celebrates National Hispanic Heritage Month, a time dedicated to honoring the rich history and vibrant culture of Americans with roots in Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central and South America.
Originally established as Hispanic Heritage Week in 1968, Ronald Reagan expanded it to a month-long celebration in 1988. The chosen dates include Columbus Day, known as Día de la Raza in many Spanish-speaking countries, and September 15, which marks the independence anniversaries of several Latin American nations.
To participate, explore some of the standout events you can join, alongside local or community activities. (For a deeper understanding of the distinctions between Hispanic, Latino, and Latinx, we’ve got you covered.)
