The highly awaited release of the PS5 Pro in 2024 is just around the corner. Sony's enhanced PlayStation 5 console is set to debut on November 7, and securing one promises to deliver the ultimate gaming experience for Sony's vast game library—especially for titles optimized for the Pro.
Although Sony has kept the exact specifications of its latest console under wraps, leaked details from PS5 Pro unboxings reveal it features an AMD Ryzen Zen 2 8-core, 16-thread CPU and a 16.7 TFLOPS AMD Radeon RDNA-based GPU. This advanced hardware allows the PS5 Pro to improve compatible games in three significant ways: the new GPU renders graphics 45% faster than the original PS5; ray tracing, which creates lifelike lighting effects, operates at potentially double or triple the speed of the PS5; and, crucially, the PS5 Pro employs AI upscaling to enhance resolution and detail through Sony's proprietary "PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution" (PSSR) technology.
Sony aims to unify the PS5's two primary game modes—Performance and Fidelity—into a single seamless experience with the PS5 Pro. Currently, many games offer a choice between these modes: Performance prioritizes faster frame rates at the cost of graphical quality, while Fidelity enhances visuals at the expense of frame rates. Games that fully leverage the PS5 Pro's additional processing power will require specific enhancements. Without these optimizations, the experience on the PS5 Pro would essentially mirror that of the standard PS5.
Sony initially revealed a small selection of games optimized for the PS5 Pro, but on Monday, the company expanded the list significantly. Over 50 titles—55 to be precise—are set to receive enhancements at launch, with more expected to follow. If you purchase a PS5 Pro, these games will deliver an unparalleled visual experience:

The extent of the improvements for many of these games remains uncertain until hands-on reviews are available. While Sony's showcase highlighted some visual upgrades, the differences were occasionally subtle. The PS5 Pro is expected to enhance both resolution and frame rates for demanding titles, but the improvements may not be substantial enough to warrant an upgrade from the standard PS5, especially given the $699 price tag.
For those who haven't yet entered the current PlayStation generation, opting for a refurbished PS5 Slim might be a more cost-effective choice, available at nearly half the price of the Pro. If I didn't already own a base PS5, this would be my preferred route. However, since I do, I'm content with sticking to my current console and saving my money.
