However, if your salon visit leaves you feeling uneasy or dissatisfied, you might be committing some common errors without realizing it. We consulted experts to uncover the frequent blunders they observe among clients. Below, nail artists share what you should avoid at a salon—and offer tips on how to handle these situations better.
1. Don’t Show Up Late
Amy Ling Lin, CEO and founder of Sundays, advises against arriving late to your manicure or pedicure appointment. If an unexpected situation arises, it’s crucial to notify the salon in advance. “Salons often operate on tight schedules, and tardiness can disrupt not only your appointment but also those following yours. While we strive to accommodate unforeseen circumstances, clear communication helps maintain smooth operations,” Lin explains.
2. Don’t Hide Sensitivities
Lin stresses the importance of disclosing any allergies, sensitivities, or medical conditions to your technician before your service begins. “Certain treatments may contain allergens or may not be appropriate for sensitive skin. Sharing this information allows us to tailor the experience to your needs and ensure your comfort,” she adds.
3. Avoid Bathroom Breaks During a Manicure
While nature sometimes calls unexpectedly, Lin recommends using the restroom before your manicure or pedicure begins. “Once your nails are being painted or treated, moving around can lead to smudges or disrupt the service. Planning ahead ensures a seamless experience,” she notes.
4. Don’t Withhold Information
Nail technicians can’t read minds. To ensure you get the results you desire, it’s essential to communicate clearly, especially for detailed services like nail art. “Start by discussing your preferences with your technician, including color, shape, length, and your commitment level. Trust their expertise, but don’t hesitate to provide feedback during the process if adjustments are needed,” advises Heather Reynosa, global education design director for OPI. Remember, the goal is for you to leave satisfied.
5. Avoid Excessive Movement
To prevent accidents and ensure a flawless result, Reynosa recommends staying as still as possible during your service. “Excessive phone use or fidgeting can lead to mistakes, such as tools slipping or polish smudging. Staying still helps the technician work efficiently and avoids prolonging the appointment for cleanup,” she explains.
6. Never Forget to Tip
Reynosa explains that, similar to the restaurant business, salon professionals depend on tips to supplement their earnings and prevent regular price hikes. “The typical tipping range is 15% to 20% per service.” If you’re pleased with the service, consider tipping generously. If unsatisfied, request a correction or express your concerns rather than omitting the tip without explanation.
