Kenzie Harkey, a professional organizer and founder of Simply Dare, explains why this is often the case. “Our busy lifestyles often lead to hurriedly stuffing clothes into drawers or hastily folding laundry and placing items wherever there’s space,” she notes.
What’s the solution? Harkey emphasizes designing a system tailored to your lifestyle and easy to uphold. “Once you’ve established your system and defined specific zones, stick to maintaining them. Every time you put away your laundry, take a moment to tidy up if necessary. Well-organized drawers create a sense of tranquility and simplicity, making your daily routine smoother and ensuring you’ll never tolerate clutter again,” advises Kris Hargrove, professional organizer and founder of Organized by Kris. Here’s how to achieve and maintain perfectly organized dresser drawers for the long term.
Store T-Shirts the Right Way
Whether paired with jeans or shorts, T-shirts are a staple in most dressers. Briana and Erica Spruille, professional organizers and founders of Just BE LLC, suggest arranging them by color. “This ensures you have the right T-shirt at your fingertips, no matter the occasion, weather, or time constraints.”
Next, use the "file fold" technique for better visibility. “With this method, fold the sleeves inward to create a long rectangle, then fold the shirt in half or thirds based on your drawer’s height. Arrange them like files in a cabinet for quick access,” explains Harkey.
Separate Your Socks
Harkey advises categorizing socks by type, keeping dress socks separate from athletic ones. “If they share a drawer, use a divider to keep them organized. For an extra touch, fold them neatly into rows for easy viewing, though this requires more upkeep.”
How to Store Underwear
Storing underwear can be tricky, but it’s not an insurmountable task. Harkey advises, “Keep it straightforward by sorting underwear by type. While some prefer folding, I find that categorizing them by type is practical and saves time on maintenance.”
How to Store Activewear
Activewear can be particularly frustrating to fold. “File folding isn’t ideal for activewear due to the lightweight, performance fabrics that don’t hold their shape well in drawers. Instead, roll them up and arrange them in rows, similar to how you’d organize file-folded T-shirts,” suggests Harkey.
Use drawer dividers to further organize your activewear. Harkey explains, “Separate items like tennis outfits, running shorts, and workout tanks. Many women own multiple pairs of similar leggings, such as 10 black pairs. In such cases, categorize the leggings by their purpose—yoga, lounging, weight training, or running—to make selection easier.”
Edit Quarterly
If your drawers are constantly overflowing, consider a seasonal wardrobe review. Harkey suggests, “When maintaining your drawers becomes a struggle, it’s often a sign you’re storing too many clothes. That’s your cue to declutter! Every three months, evaluate your wardrobe and donate items you no longer need to a local charity.”
If You Only Do One Thing
If a full dresser reorganization isn’t feasible right now, Harkey recommends starting with drawer dividers. “Drawer dividers are one of the most effective tools for maintaining an organized home. They can transform your space, and for added efficiency, label the inside edge of each drawer to clearly identify each section.”
