Arranging your furnishings can feel like solving a high-stakes puzzle, where every item must fit perfectly to create a space that feels both inviting and harmonious.
Thankfully, interior design experts have established guidelines to help you achieve a balanced and aesthetically pleasing layout. From optimal furniture spacing to selecting the right rug size, these tips ensure your rooms are both functional and visually appealing. Follow these principles to transform your space into the stylish haven you’ve always wanted.
Consider How You’ll Utilize the Space

For instance, if you often dine in the living room, opt for lower side tables near seating areas to conveniently place drinks and snacks. Similarly, if you enjoy relaxing with your feet up, consider adding a stool or positioning a coffee table closer to your sofa for added comfort.
Ensure Adequate Space for Movement

The required space varies depending on the area. In high-traffic zones, Rosanna Bassford from Memmo Interiors suggests leaving three to four feet of space, while two to three feet is sufficient for lower-traffic areas or between furniture pieces. "For instance, if your sofa is near a main walkway, ensure ample space is maintained," she advises. "I recommend at least three feet around a dining table to allow chairs to be pulled out comfortably."
For bedrooms, Helft suggests maintaining four feet of clearance around the bed, if space permits, to ensure easy movement and accessibility.
Position Artwork Lower Than You Might Expect

Designers often notice a common issue: artwork is frequently hung too high on walls. Goldberg recommends hanging pieces at gallery height, approximately 57 inches from the floor, while Helft adjusts placement based on context. "Art should be at eye level, typically around 55 inches from the ground," she explains. "When placed above a sofa, it should be slightly lower to ensure visibility while seated. The bottom of the artwork should sit about 10 inches above the sofa’s backrest."
Divide a Large Room Into Cozy Zones
Malka HelftAvoid spreading furniture too thinly in a large space. If you have a spacious living area, use rugs and furniture to create distinct zones. Helft suggests setting up a dedicated game area with a small table and chairs, separate from the main seating area. Alternatively, you can turn a quiet corner into a reading spot, craft station, or compact workspace.
Choose the Right Rug Size

In a living room seating area, all furniture pieces should have at least their front legs on the rug. For dining areas, the rug should be large enough to accommodate chairs being pulled out without any legs slipping off, preventing accidents caused by uneven surfaces.
Keep in Mind That Rules Are Flexible

"Occasionally breaking the rules can add a personalized touch to a space, reflecting the homeowner’s unique style," Goldberg explains. "It all depends on the room’s dimensions and the residents’ heights, as the goal is to optimize functionality for those who use the space. If there’s a beloved piece, find a creative way to incorporate it seamlessly."
