However, here's a money- and time-saving tip: Carefully selected potted plants can make a big difference in enhancing your home's exterior. Mixing plants of different heights, textures, and colors can create a dynamic and visually appealing display. For maximum impact, place vibrant colors in prominent areas, then ground them with subtle earth tones for contrast.
If you’re not exactly a gardening pro, choose plants that are easy to care for and thrive in your local climate. For expert suggestions, we turned to Erin Schanen of the blog and YouTube channel The Impatient Gardener and David Angelov of PlantParenthood for plant recommendations that will leave your neighbors and passersby amazed.
Before you start, here's a pro tip from Schanen: Plan where you’ll place all your pots before filling them with soil and plants. Moving large potted plants or shrubs can be surprisingly heavy work.
Read on to discover the best potted plants that will enhance your home's curb appeal.
Fuchsia Plants
Image Source: phanasitti/Getty ImagesFuschia plants are known for their striking bell-shaped blooms that come in stunning colors, ranging from soft candy pink to deep magenta. Angelov recommends placing these vibrant flowers near entryways so guests can admire them as they wait. These annuals can also enhance key features in the landscape, such as walkways, mailboxes, patios, gazebos, or even pool areas. For added charm, Angelov suggests pairing fuschias with fragrant plants like lavender or gardenia for an extra touch of allure.
Fuschia plants come in both hardy and semi-hardy varieties, flourishing in the summer and fall. They thrive in plenty of sunlight with good drainage. To create a striking visual, consider placing them in large pots or hanging baskets grouped together. If your home has a neutral-colored exterior, bold potted flower combinations will create a stunning contrast. Pair fuschias with begonias, dahlias, or petunias for an eye-catching and long-lasting potted display.
Evergreens

Boxwood remains a timeless favorite for adding sophistication to any home’s exterior. Its dense evergreen foliage is perfect for creating compact topiary. You can trim it into neat hedges, balls, or other elegant shapes for a formal look. Boxwood is also ideal for framing entrances or lining walkways.
The yew tree is another versatile evergreen that suits many gardens. Schanen mentions that yews thrive in shaded areas, and their upright form can bring charm to entryways or driveways. When planted in quality potting mix with good drainage, yews do well in containers. Regular watering and occasional fertilizer will keep them healthy. “They won’t grow significantly in a pot, so select one that matches the size you desire,” Schanen advises.
Agapanthus is a popular plant known for its ornamental beauty and ease of care.
KjellBrynildsen/Getty ImagesAgapanthus, often referred to as the Lily of the Nile, is a captivating plant with tall, slender stems adorned with clusters of blue or white blossoms. It's an ideal choice for adding height and vertical flair to a porch or patio. You can also use it to create a vibrant focal point in a garden bed. Even when it's not in bloom, its dark, shiny leaves bring a pleasant contrast to any yard. However, it's sensitive to frost and thrives best in sunny, mild climates. For optimal curb appeal, plant agapanthus in tall, narrow pots, arranged in groups of three to five bulbs. Just keep in mind that it’s not a plant you'd want near play areas for children or pets, as the sap can cause eye and skin irritation—and the leaves should never be consumed.
Purple Fountain Grass

Schanen advises that when aiming for low-maintenance potted plants, it's best to start with those featuring attractive foliage, as flowering plants often require extra care like deadheading or trimming. If you're looking for plants that require minimal upkeep while providing excellent visual rewards, purple fountain grass and other ornamental grasses, like Japanese forest grass, are great choices. As Schanen notes, they also add a dynamic touch to your garden, swaying gracefully in the breeze.
Ornamental grasses are easy to maintain as long as they’re placed in the proper container. Ensure the pot offers enough space, with at least 8 inches of room on all sides of the bulb root. Additionally, the pot should have plenty of drainage holes. For a natural look, position the grasses near a fence, against the garage walls, or beside outdoor furniture. These plants are typically drought-resistant and perform well in cooler climates.
Fruits and Vegetables

While not typically chosen for landscaping, there's been a rising trend in cultivating beautiful vegetable gardens, especially with the growing popularity of English cottage gardens.
Cabbage and lettuce plants pair beautifully with vibrant chili peppers, peas, and tomatoes, creating a striking focal point in your front or side yard. Fruit trees like apple, lemon, orange, or fig, when placed in small pots, make charming additions along walkways. Combined with other landscaping features, these colorful plants transform from mere food sources into a stunning piece of art for your neighbors to admire.
Tradescantia Zebrina

Its striking foliage, with purple, green, and silver-white stripes, leaves a lasting impression, while the trailing vines add flair and sophistication to the front of your house. Tradescantia zebrina thrives in consistently moist soil, so don’t forget to water it regularly to make the most of its beauty.
