This often-overlooked space can be a mystery—chilly, dim, and, depending on your freezer’s design, quite deep.
Regularly assessing your freezer is key to maintaining its organization and reducing food waste. Unsure how to begin? Here are six items you should consider removing from your freezer.
Unidentified Items
Whitney Cardosi, a nutrition coach, cooking instructor, and cookbook author, advises discarding mystery items immediately. “If it’s unmarked or shows signs of freezer burn, it’s best to toss it out,” she explains.
Cardosi recommends consuming cooked leftovers and pre-made meals within three months. In contrast, raw meats and vegetables can last between six to twelve months if stored correctly.
To prevent this issue, she suggests labeling containers with a permanent marker, noting both the contents and the date before freezing. “This small effort helps you locate items quickly and ensures nothing gets overlooked,” she emphasizes.
Outdated Foods
Although clearing out expired food from your fridge seems straightforward, you might be surprised by how much outdated food is lurking in your freezer. “This indicates that these items have exceeded their shelf life and should be thrown away,” explains Shantae Duckworth, a professional organizer. “This applies to fruits, meats, desserts, and even ice! Just like in a fridge, all items should be rotated regularly and consumed promptly.”
Duckworth recommends taking everything out of your freezer during a clean-out. “When returning items, place the oldest ones at the front to ensure they’re used first,” she advises.
Nearly-Empty Ice Cream Containers
If you’ve been holding onto that last bit of cookie dough for a special occasion, now’s the time to enjoy it. “Look for forgotten popsicles or ice cream containers hidden in the back,” suggests Cardosi. “We often end up with leftovers tucked away in odd corners, taking up space that could be used for more practical items.”
Bulk Purchases
Keep in mind, decluttering doesn’t necessarily mean tossing things out right away. It can also involve organizing items to ensure they’re used before spoiling. This approach helps you avoid spending money on uneaten food and provides a great opportunity to explore new recipes or get creative in the kitchen.
Cardosi highlights that repurposing is an excellent strategy. “If you have a large quantity of something your family won’t eat—like a vegetable blend—consider using it in soups or donating it if it’s still sealed,” she recommends.
Non-Edible Items
Allie Echeverria, MS, RD, LD, a registered dietitian and home economics expert, emphasizes the importance of regularly clearing out non-food items from your freezer. “How many ice packs are stored there, including those for food and those for injuries?” Echeverria questions.
She advises checking gel ice packs for any damage and discarding them if needed. “Store one or two sets in the freezer and let the rest thaw, keeping them in a cool, dry place away from sunlight,” she suggests.
Outdated Food Storage Containers
Similar to food, storage containers don’t last forever. If you see cracks or warping, they’re likely no longer effective at preserving freshness. Discard them and consider upgrading to a fresh set.
