A glowing, bronzed complexion is often a summer goal, but getting a tan is arguably one of the worst things for your health and appearance over time.
“Frequent tanners—whether using tanning beds or basking in the sun—will experience quicker collagen breakdown, leading to the early onset of fine lines, wrinkles, sunspots, and sagging,” explains Carmen Castilla, MD, a board-certified dermatologist at New York Dermatology Group. She also mentions that sunburns, tanning, and other forms of unprotected sun exposure increase the likelihood of developing skin cancer.
So, what are your options if you want the sun-kissed glow without the damage? Fortunately, there are plenty of alternatives available!
1. Self-Tanner
Forget everything you thought you knew about the old, streaky, orange-hued sunless tanners. The latest generation of self-tanners stands apart, providing a consistently natural-looking faux tan.
“Self-tanning lotions offer a safer alternative to tanning beds and sun exposure. They work by temporarily coloring the outermost layer of skin with a substance called dihydroxyacetone (DHA),” explains Aimee Carr, an esthetician, makeup artist, and founder of Voodoo Makeup.
This creates a sun-kissed glow without the harmful UV rays. There are various formulas available, such as sprays, gels, and lotions. When using a faux tanner, it’s best to test it on a discreet area—like your stomach or upper thighs—and wait 24 hours. Also, apply a light layer and build up the color gradually.
“For an even application, it’s recommended to exfoliate before using the lotion and to apply in a circular motion,” advises Carr. “Be sure to wait for the lotion to dry before dressing and avoid water exposure for at least six to eight hours to allow the color to fully develop.”
Castilla states that the results last about a week, recommending less application on areas like elbows and knees, as they tend to absorb more product.
2. Professional Spray Tan
Although self-tanning products have improved greatly over time, they still require a bit of skill and effort to achieve an even, flawless faux tan. If you’re not confident in your technique just yet, a professional spray tan might be the perfect alternative.
“Look for a spray tan studio that uses top-quality products and has skilled technicians to help you achieve a tan that complements your skin tone,” suggests celebrity makeup artist Elizabeth Seropian. “It’s an effortless process that makes you look like you’ve been on a perpetual summer vacation.”
Be sure to follow the salon's prep instructions and allow time for the color to fully develop after your spray tan session.
3. Powder Bronzer
Even a light dusting of powder makeup bronzer can instantly give you that “I just spent a week in Tulum” radiance. Strategically apply bronzer to key areas of your face—like your hairline, temples, nose, and cheeks—to add warmth and subtly sculpt your features.
You can also apply bronzer to other parts of your body, including your collarbone, under your chin, and shoulders. Carr suggests using a large, fluffy brush for application and blending thoroughly to ensure a smooth, natural finish.
4. Bronzing Makeup Drops
Bronzing makeup drops are a great alternative or addition to powder bronzer. They work similarly to sunless tanners but provide a more subtle glowy, tanned effect and allow you to gradually build up the color.
Makeup artist Brittany Gharring recommends mixing the drops into your regular face moisturizer or foundation, then applying it as you normally would to your face, neck, and chest. With time, you’ll achieve a gorgeous faux tan. The more frequently you use them, the deeper your tan will become.
5. Body Foundation
Yes, body foundation is definitely a thing.
“Body foundations are an excellent choice for those looking to cover imperfections and add a beautiful tan. The shade is up to you, and it won’t take time to deepen like some tanning lotions,” explains Seropian.
After exfoliating and moisturizing, apply the body foundation to your legs, arms, chest, and/or midriff using a large, fluffy makeup brush. Alternatively, you can apply it with your hands, just like you would with a moisturizer.
“To keep your body foundation in place all day, set it with a translucent powder or setting spray,” Seropian recommends. “This will also stop it from transferring to your clothes.”
6. Weekly Exfoliation
Physical scrubs and chemical exfoliants may not directly give you a tanned look, but they can certainly enhance your skin’s glow and radiance. Exfoliating helps to slough off dead skin cells that can accumulate on the surface, making your complexion appear dull.
Castilla suggests using a glycolic acid body wash once or twice a week, followed by a moisturizer each time. Don’t forget to treat your face as well. A gentle chemical peel or mild scrub can boost your glow and help your makeup and self-tanner appear more natural.
