Shay Holland, an interior designer and HGTV personality, suggests that a few cans of paint can help you complete stylish and budget-friendly weekend projects. “Focusing on smaller painting tasks allows you to gradually improve your space without the commitment of painting entire rooms,” she explains.
Discover six painting ideas that can be finished in a weekend or less, paired with expert advice to ensure flawless execution.
Trim, Mouldings, and Ceilings
Transforming your space with color doesn’t require painting entire walls. “Adding a fresh vibe can be as simple as painting trim, molding, and ceilings in a shade slightly lighter or darker than the walls—like accessorizing a classic outfit with new shoes or a stylish bag,” Holland suggests. For a more daring look, consider using a contrasting color on these elements to match your personal style.
Closets
Small spaces like closets deserve attention too. Whether it’s a bedroom closet or an entryway coat closet, a fresh coat of paint can elevate its appeal. Holland shares that she’s currently working on a project where she’s fully immersing a small closet in one color, painting everything from the walls and ceiling to the shelves and trim.
For a seamless appearance, match the closet’s color to the surrounding room. Alternatively, choose a completely different hue to create a striking contrast and add an unexpected burst of color to your space.
Powder Rooms
Painting a powder room is a quick task, given its typically small size. However, don’t underestimate the importance of preparation. “For powder rooms and small bathrooms, I suggest preparing the night before by thoroughly cleaning the walls, baseboards, and floors,” advises Siobhan Alvarez-Borland, a DIY and lifestyle expert.
Depending on the bathroom, you might need to relocate or remove fixtures like sinks, toilets, or vanities, though some can be painted around. Despite these steps, the entire project can still be completed within a weekend.
Laundry Rooms
If laundry feels like a chore, a splash of color in the laundry room might make it more enjoyable. While you can usually leave your washer and dryer in place, Alvarez-Borland recommends a thorough cleaning before starting. “Planning ahead is key to speeding up any home project,” she notes. “It’s easy to overlook that this is a high-traffic area, and accumulated dust or grime can affect the quality of your paint job.”
Dining Rooms
While painting a kitchen can feel overwhelming, tackling a dining room is far simpler. To achieve the best results, Alvarez-Borland recommends applying several thin coats of paint rather than one thick layer. “Thicker coats take longer to dry, which might leave you needing an extra coat without enough time to finish,” she explains. A little patience here can actually streamline the process.
Furniture
For a quick and easy painting project, consider revitalizing a piece of furniture. “You don’t have to paint the entire item,” Holland suggests. “For instance, adding color to the back panels of a bookcase or glass-front cabinets can create a striking focal point without breaking the bank.”
Even better, you might not need to buy new paint. “Weekend projects are perfect for using up leftover paint,” Holland adds. “If you have a spare quart from another room, try adding a pop of color to your kitchen island or fireplace surround.”
Make sure to choose furniture that’s suitable for repainting, like solid wood or wood veneer items. Additionally, always remember to sand and prepare the surface properly before starting.
