Interior design trends seem to change at lightning speed these days. One moment, a style is everywhere, trending with millions of views on TikTok and Instagram, and the next, it's out of fashion. So, how can you keep up? The truth is: perhaps you don’t.
Rather than chasing fleeting trends, it makes far more sense to opt for timeless designs that will bring lasting enjoyment. This approach not only removes the guesswork of choosing what to buy, but also helps save money by avoiding constant purchases—and you'll be less likely to tire of your space. Here are six timeless design ideas that will never lose their appeal, according to interior designers.
Stripes
Patterns can be tricky to select, but as interior designer Francesca Grace points out, stripes are always a safe bet. “Stripes are a timeless design feature that have stood the test of time. Their simplicity and versatility make them enduringly popular,” she explains.
What’s great about stripes is their versatility—they can be used in various ways, from bold and vibrant to soft and neutral, making them suitable for various tastes and preferences. “The visual effect of elongating or widening a space through stripes makes them a popular choice for adding interest and dimension,” Grace adds.
Wallpaper
Though some might say wallpaper has experienced a comeback in recent years, it never truly fell out of fashion. “Wallpaper has been an essential element of interior design for centuries, and its enduring popularity comes from its ability to add texture and personality to any room,” says Grace. “While specific patterns and styles may rise and fall with trends, wallpaper as a concept remains a timeless decorative choice.”
“Whether it's timeless floral motifs, bold geometric patterns, or textured finishes, wallpaper provides limitless options for personalization and creative expression.”
Wallpaper is also an excellent way to introduce color and pattern into a space, particularly when the furniture is neutral. The rise of peel-and-stick wallpaper has made installation a breeze—making it an attractive option for renters or anyone who enjoys updating their surroundings frequently.
Earth Tones
Grace explains that earth tones bring a sense of warmth, calm, and a deep connection to nature that outlasts transient trends. “These shades provide a soothing backdrop for any room and work effortlessly with other colors to create balanced and welcoming spaces,” she says. “Earth tones pair beautifully with various design styles, whether rustic, traditional, modern, or minimalist.”
Neutral Color Palettes
Opting for a neutral color palette is always a safe choice when it comes to expensive pieces and long-term fixtures. “Stick with neutral tones for elements like paint, tiles, countertops, window treatments, and large furniture items,” advises Ellen Holt, Lead Designer at MDI Luxury Design.
With a neutral foundation, you can easily introduce distinctive statement pieces to make a space feel both personal and harmonious. (But if bold colors are more your style, feel free to disregard this advice and choose the palette that resonates most with you.)
Natural Materials
Holt affirms that natural materials will always remain in style, especially for permanent fixtures. “Opt for hardwood floors, natural stone countertops, ceramic tiles, and textiles made of linen, cotton, or wool,” Holt suggests.
Another timeless design element is plants. If you're not a fan of plants, Holt recommends bringing in natural touches through landscapes or botanical-themed artwork instead.
That Thing You Truly Adore
Whether it's the dining chairs you've dreamed of for years or the cozy throw you’ve had since your post-grad days, if something brings you joy, it will always feel timeless. “We've all heard the saying that if you truly love something, it will never go out of style, and I couldn’t agree more,” says Carrie Moore of Carrie Moore Interior Design. “There are items in my home that have been with me for over a decade, and I still adore them.”
One of Moore’s personal favorite timeless pieces is a white paper lantern hanging over her dining table. “The soft, glowing light it gives off reminds me of a full moon,” she says. “We love using paper lanterns in client projects because we enjoy them so much.”
